Supervisor with nearly 40 students
M

Thanks to all of you guys.
Well i had short chat with him about general things, but i will meet him soon to talk about the project and visit the lab.

Is it ok to mention my concern about this issue to him in the meeting? but i do not know how to phrase it in a way that it wont be rude lol.

About the fees, my father will pay my tuition fees, and i should manage the living costs with my wife.

getting PhD degree is a dream i always had, plus it will open a good career chances in the energy industry.

Supervisor with nearly 40 students
M

hi,
Do you think its normal that a supervisor has nearly 40 students working under his supervision? im thinking in self funding my degree in science, a supervisor offered me a project in my field of interest. He already has nearly 40 students and counting.
My question: is this normal? should i worry that this will effect my communications with him as student and supervisor due to the high number students who are already on board?

Thanks

Supervisors.
M

Hi..
im prospective self funded PhD student.
i have a meeting with my supervisor soon..

I read alot here and on other forums about students suffer from their supervisors like the supervisor not really supervise the project in anyway or means, ignoring, no meeting for long time and ... etc. I know this is vary from supervisor to another due to their own way and policy in supervision..

Therefore i want to ask my prospective supervisor about his supervision policy, and i do not know how to phrase the question to him, is it ok to ask directly or should i phrase it in different way...

Thanks in advance

Even with all the effort, how can a person fail a PhD?
M

I heard its all about your supervisor, who gives the examiners an idea about your work, or in another word he or she comments to them about if you did well or bad, your work worth a PhD degree or not, they will depend heavily on the supervisor feedback to have an initial idea about your work then they confirm it during the viva so you have to do your best in both the 3 years and the 2 hrs of viva....

This is what i think....

Thinking of quitting my PhD
M

Hi, if you are D. Eng it suppose to be heavily influenced by the company who funds the project and spending your majority of the time within the company.

All the best

Lack of confidence, need your advice.
M

40 phd students under his supervision !!!

Of course he wont have time for you. As prospective phd student i wont go to busy supervisor coz i know i will face same problems.

Good luck mate wish you all the best.....

From MSc to PhD... Same supervisor.
M

Hi.
I did my MSc with a leading prof in his field, and he was very helpful during my research in terms of meetings and research supervision.

Now i want to pursue a PhD.

Is the MSc supervision different from the PhDs by this i mean do the supervisors have to deal with the MSc students in different way than PhDs.

In another word shall i expect the same level of supervision as i did with my MSc?

Thanks alot in advance

Baby on the way
M

PhD studentship interview
M

Hi.
I have a PhD studentship interview in one of the highly ranked universities in the uk.

The admission office informed me that the interview will last around 20 min!!

My question is:
20 min is not long time for a phd studentship interview (i had interviews before, all of it were more than 45 min)
Please could you advise me what kind of questions they will ask in 20 min only? is it general or deep in the project topic, is it normal to have interview for 20 min only?

Thanks in advance
:-)
