Ticking word count, Where when and why?

Silly string is a great connector and doesn't even come out in the wash!!!

Seriously, connecting chapters is just simply part of the writing phases I go through. The Flowers Paradigm which works for me is a four phased process, and the chapter connection would start to build in the final steps of the process. The early stage is the best, its the madman stage where you can be wholly creative and just write away ( like a madman!). This of course does not work for everyone.

WHY??? Business and LAW??!

Law as an academic subject at the PhD level is an altogether different pursuit in my opinion than pursuing law to become a practicing lawyer.

Sadly, the image of law for many is as has been described, and that is unfortunate, because there are people who are in law that do it for reasons other than money. That was the point I wanted to make by suggesting that Business and Law do not go together hand in glove, necessarily.

Again, what about human rights law? Where does that fit into a business and law focus?

The professional qualifications needed to pursue the practice of law in the UK are what, an LLB or BA of some kind, and then the qualifications to either be a soliciter or barrister. While a practitioner might go on to a PhD, I would suspect that people who pursue the PhD in law, even if a practitioner, do so, NOT for the extras it could bring to their practice of law, but because of its academic value.

What about, say, human rights law? That has nothing to do with business studies, does it? Is law more of a social science? Does it form better links with social sciences, dependent upon the particular subject being studied? What about law and economics? Law and social policy? Law and...Can law exist in the academic world without being linked to something, another academic field? Does it have enough to stand on its own?

But of all the things its linked too..BUSINESS??!!!

I really wish the forum admin would have a serious rethink on this.

WHY??? Business and LAW??!

Law has relatively little to do with business, really, or at least as MUCH to do with that as it does with other academic disciplines. Or is this lumping together part of the econometrics mindset that is going to inevitably perhaps swamp academia, and make only BUSINESS LAW as opposed to other kinds of law study attractive?

This, in my mind, is very myopic and ignores ALL the vast fields that law might encompass.

Why is law lumped in with business on this forum, or indeed anywhere, within the academic world?

I think its important for people to know what works for them...I am fussy about the kind of pen I write with, for instance, the wrong one puts me off. The main thing is to know what works for you, even if its vastly different than what other people do, and stick with it. My style would put a linear thinker into fits. And since its been awhile since I mentioned it, the "Flowers Paradigm" is a process that works for me.

I think its important to keep in mind that people write differently; and the process is very different between individuals. I can sit down and write anything, anytime, anywhere, for a first draft phase, and then must do the ( tedious) work of structuring and editing. Other people like to write in a planned linear style, working out a structure before hand. Others can only write when the planets are in the right alignment, the degree of heat and cold balanced just so, the sunlight at the right angle, etc--that is they are very environment sensitive. I like to draft and edit by hand and if struck by an idea, can scribble it down on the back of an old receipt in my purse and then later try to turn it into something.

How come Martin Amis has been made a professor?

I never even heard of him before this thread...so not sure what that means about me...or him?

Sorry, but that just somehow begged for a trout recipe.

"Call me anything you want, but don't call me late for a trout dinner"

I agree with that sentiment. Whatever I am called is fine, I am not really bothered with it--but eating! Now its important to not miss one of the most simple pleasures in life!

Well, there is the old saying, "Call me anything you want, just don't call me late for dinner!"

stress of a PhD - is it normal to feel like this?

Although its unlikely to change, I would think it would be most beneficial for long term and real changes to be made to dysfunctional environments, rather than band-aiding up the situation by focusing on the student as the one with the problem.

To the extent that the student's distress levels are indicative of dysfunctional environments, it is the dysfunction in the environment and NOT the student that needs "fixed."

And, yes, supervisors yelling, raising voices, not communicating, not being respectful of the student, having unrealistic requirements on working hours or conditions, etc, those are all contributors to a dysfunctional environment.

Rather than seeing the PhD as being inherently stressful as a simple fact of doing the PhD, I think an alternate view point should be presented, and that is that the environment in which the PhD student is asked to do the work could be so dysfunctional that it brings on depression, stress and anxiety in the non-dysfunctional student.

Someone once told me that emotionally healthy people will feel huge levels of emotional distress if they get placed into dysfunctional environments--that things like depression and anxiety that are experienced by the person could be a reflection of the dysfunctional levels of the environment RATHER than a sign of anything "wrong" with the person.

In other words, the levels of stress, anxiety, and depression that someone might feel is due to the dysfunction they are placed in and must survive in order to complete the PhD.
