Happy Friday everyone!
P

Here we are again - another week passed.
I am cream crackered. Have a good w.e everyone.

What do you do when...
P

I am exactly the same. When the going gets tough - I go to bed.
I am a big believer in the afternoon nap / siesta.

the agony of writing a conference paper
P

normally a 'conference paper' in reality is just a presentation - you don't actually have to write a formal paper & take it along to the conference. It's rather misleading really.
It is standard for the conference to have a disclaimer advising they may seek to publish - but in my limited expierence I've never actually seen this happen.

A challenge to PhD students
P

I agree - it could get beyond embarrassing. That it why you should have a turntablism battle.
I have it all planned - students ( the DMC team) in addidas, lecturers ( Grandmaster Flash team) in old skool one star. Rounds in MCing, scratching & of course the big catapillaring finale at the end. Mars bars for the best dancers.

Horray for research!
P

Hi all

You know when your project is pootling along well and interesting things happening - do you get all excited?

Its not very often but when I have times like that I get really happy and realise I love doing what I do and remember why I started on this journey.

Am I just a wierdo / saddo? We all tend to share on here when things aren't very good but I just wanted to say today that I think we are all quite lucky.

:-)

Calling all International Students
P

Artist formally known as Mia,

I am a UK/home student but when I did my MA all my best course buddies were international students & the comment above about bank accounts rings v. true. My arab friend from Saudi had a nightmare trying to get a bank account & had to get a letter from the Uni, she also had to register with the local police!?
Also one other girl from Africa had terrible trouble getting a job despite being an aid to a senior Gov minister in her own country she ended up doing cleaning. It was a lot to do with understanding how to communicate her resume and exactly where to look for jobs etc..I think

Not sure if this is helpful or just ancedotal - but ther you go.

Does anyone else have a stupid phobia?
P

Again not phobia level for me - but I can not stand that white polystyrene packaging stuff, that comes in boxes and holds corners of white goods. The sound of it scraping against cardboard when you have to pull it out of the box, has a very wierd effect on me. I hate it.

I know someone who knows someone who has a phobia of cinemas & finds it very difficult even to walk past one & believes they would die if they went inside?!

Why did H leave?
P

Unfortunately I ended up being a bit more prickly than normal, because it got so personal, ( which I am sorry about), but I certainly didn't intend to drive anyone away & I wish everyone well & would like to 'see' them on here at anytime - including the ocassional post about mooncups /belford -which are funny. Very glad to see sixkitten (thou she graciously stayed out of it) & MistaG are still around. It was just what had got really boring to me was the moaning about the forum being boring and I was accused of taking life too seriously, when actually I think it was others who had got a little too serious about the forum. Anyway I don't want to rake it all up again. Thats all I have to say
I think the forum was / is and will continue to be really helpful and a welcome respite.

Why did H leave?
P

They all got the hump, because H said it was boring with out DanB et al. I told her off for being a bit damning of her fellow posters, when there were quite a lot of posts that week from people feeling really down and struggling with their first few weeks
Sadly it all got a bit nasty.
Anyway I think they're all having fun on MSM somewhere

Happy Friday everyone!
P

I hope you have a good day & enjoy your week ends.

Morning tea/ coffee/ coke?
P

A good cup of spanish or turkish coffee - never instant (eugh! ).
At the moment I am fixated on wheatgerm bread & peanut butter for breakie - but it goes in cycles. As winter is coming, I'll be onto the porrige soon.

Writing Update for hillyg
P

Good news you're feeling better. I hope you have a better time over the next few weeks -really good luck.

As an aside I totally agree with HillyG about moaning with peers. Its easy to get into that habit of all wallowing together without a solution, or bringing each other further down, if you're teetering towards a bit of a slump.

I am glad the future looks a bit brighter

These freshers are getting younger every year...
P

I taught a class of freshers yesterday. Full house & all bright and bushy tailed. It was very cool actually & I don't want to sound patronizing but there was something terribley sweet about them.
If only all my classes were like that. I expect I'll only see 50% of them next week & they'll be bored and cynical.....

Research fellow interview tomorrow
P

I recommend black leggins under a black wrap dress
Best of luck, & fingers crossed DJW.
