While it is great to have a lifelong burning passion for the subject u will be doing- Its is gud to be interested in the subject of choice...Interested enough to pursue it for 3 maybe four years, interested enough to read a lot of research papers on it.....Sometimes when u take a subject that u are 'interested' in, after reading more on the topic, usually the interest builds up and turns into passion...So look for sumthin that u r interested in....

Ermm Amenderf, I am writing a proposal...like a plan as to what I will be doing for my PhD; Quite different from a transfer. This is the initial, rough draft of what i will be doing in the next three years of PhD!!!(Phew!! sounds slightly scary!!!!)

Firstly, I would suggest is that u smoothen ur relationship with ur sup.... I know that he didnt trust u in the begining and that hurts u. Believe me he realises that he has let u down and he is trying to make ammends. So please be large hearted and forgive him....And then when things are better with ur sup maybe u can tell him... If not u can always send an e-mail explaining the whole issue....Something like this happened to me when I was a project assistant and I went with a really sad face and told him what happened and my Prof tottaly went ballistic and screamed at this guy. After that this guy is scared to be even seen around me!!! I know it will take a lot of courage to take such a step... but would not it be better than enduring this??? There might also be a student bosy in ur college who can help u deal with this emotionally and also help u to take action... Till then put him on ignore mode!!!

Lara!!Gud that u got everything going on well despite the hitches... U r inspirational.... And thanks a lot for reminding me to back up my data (me almost forgot) And I dont wanna learn it the hard way.
Did a lot of reading yesterday but not much writing.. Have to sit and put my thoughts into words. Spent most of the day cleaning my room and I have friends over for dinner... So this means another night in with all u nice people!!!

Ohhh!! yeah!! My supervisor is a ROCKSTAR!!! He has sound scientific knowledge, always around to help me, is a very patient person and very humble. I have loads of things to learn from him not just scientifically but also as a person. He is the HOD of the Uni and has absolutely no ego abt him. One of things what I like most abt him is that he gives me the freedom to take most of my decisions myself. He was very helpful before I came to UK, I had some visa problems and health problems and he was there for me always. Its like a dream come true. Touchwood!!!!:-x

I know things can sometimes get sooo tough , but u hang in there girl. U have to understand that it is difficult to get along with everyone in the lab. But try to find out why exactly this guy is giving u a bad time? Is there something u did or say without meaning to?? Then u can just apologise....But if this guy is just being a jerk (from the way u have described) just ignore him for a few days. Most bullies stop annoying once u have learnt to ignore them... If such bad behaviour still persists complain to the higher authorities in ur college. All the sexist remarks and jokes can affect u negatively....Y dont u speak to ur sup abt this - he might not ignore u once he has heard ur story. Give it another try and please be patient. And however akward it may sound dont hide from ur sup, just because he didnt listen to ur version. Give it another try......Dont give up ur PhD just because he is giving u a bad time...I know it is hard to cope but I am sure u will come out a much stronger person.

Although I am a first year student, I would say the most important thing is to be positive and maintain a gud work-life balance.....Yeah and maintaing gud health , especially mental health is very important!!! U dont want to go CRAZZZZZZY at the end of all this........Yeah!!! and try to enjoy all what u r doing!!:-)

Must be the only first year PhD student to put my attendence on this register.... Just that I have been writing my project proposal for a gud 2 weeks and with a lot of mistakes.... Just have to IRON out the clinks..... I just want to present it on Monday, so that I can start with my experiments as soon as possible....And also there are a few sections of my proposal that I need deeper understanding of... so here goes!!

Most often u can judge a little bit of the sups character by the way he corresponds to u via e-mail-Is he thoughful, is he friendly, is he concerned, is he prompt in replying to ur queries etc. Then next thing would be to find out by having a chat with him.... But these things would just give u a rough idea as to how he might be....I f u are really desperate u can hire some agency to spy on him...hehehe!!! just kidding!!

One of my cousins who was a chain smoker gave up smoking half a year ago.... I mean he just said one day to me that he would give up the cancer stick and didnt once touch it after that. So although it sounds 'miraculous' it is POSSIBLE. I would suggest that u start by cutting the number of cigerettes u smoke gradually till u come to ZERO cigerettes a day. Find out why u r addicted to smoking... for e.g some people smokle more when they are stressed. So think of an alternative way to fight stress- gymming or swimming perhaps. Some people also try to chew gum so that they reduce their ciggy breaks. Try a nicotine patch... Helped one of my friends!!!She took a couple of moth to kick the habbit , but she surely did it in the end.

Dear All,
I have just started with my PhD and I get assignments for which I have to write about 2000 words. I will have to start using a reference manager from a couple of weeks. Which software is the best? I would really appreciate if you would let me know the pros and cons of each software. I am not great with technology , so a software which is simple helps.
