Lynn,

interesting subject. Do not know regarding Canada, yet in the UK access to NHS dentists is not easy, a lot of people go privately. Do not know whether being in a nursing home helps: suppose depends on how well it is run. In the UK my experience is that standsards of nursing homes vary significantly.

Hi Lynn,

welcome,
So you are into care of the elderly?

How to start and figure out what is important?
R

Dear Soophie,

try and find whether there are books written related to your subject. Usually this is a helpful starting point regarding the crucial literature and authors.

Kind regards

Hi plumshower,

must be hard to be on your own. I agree it is not easy to stay motivated if you have not got other students with whom you can reflect regarding topics or to discuss issues.

Are there no other students in your environment at all? May be it is possible to set up a local "Quality circle" to discuss issues?
Could you travel to university to use the library? At least you there surrounded by other students.

Regarding your job, obviously you have to make the decision yourself. Do you need the money? Does the job mean essential social contacts? etc.

Good that you bring your issues forward at this forum

Supervision nightmare, what do I do now?!
R

Hi Corinne,
maybe you are actually very good and do not need a lot of supervision!

Obviously it is unforgivable that the supervisor is not able to organise his own life and does not provide you feedback. On the other hand you may find that actually most of the work you do is of a high standard and does not need a lot of correction. Remember the trick is perseverance! Try to keep going and try to negotiate with him: Ok I do not need a lot of supervision, yet I do want you to keep this and this agreement! Write that down and try and pin point him on that!

Is this of help?

stats help trying to find an overall standard deviation.
R

Hi,

probably naif yet can you not add them all up and devide by 12 to get the overall mean?
Regarding SD for all one can use excell to calculate this from your 12 figures.
Please shoot me if I am totally wrong!

Confusion between "framework" and "guidelines" - Is there a difference between the two?
R

Hi Friendlyface,

I know that in medical areas the common terms used are protocols and guidelines. Protocols you must follow, while guidelines are more a guide, where your clinical judgement is considered to be important regarding the final decision. As such a guideline is usually more acceptable.
I do not know explicitly where "framework" would be positioned.
Is this of help?

looking for a phd in cancer tumourigenesis

Hi Marisette

I have recently been confronted with a cancer research project at the University of Sterling, Scotland, may be a place from which you could try and get more information.

It's not about punishing your supervisor or being a whistleblower...
R

QTPie,

I apologise for my last question; I can see from your previous entries that you are upset. I am sorry.

It's not about punishing your supervisor or being a whistleblower...
R

Yeah, see your point,

you are quite right that these things are very limited if the supervisor does not want to play ball.

How are you today?

It's not about punishing your supervisor or being a whistleblower...

May be not suitable in your specific situation but how about setting up an educational contract between supervisor and student? This is used in a lot of settings related to adult education. It would make explicit what you can expect from each other and provides "internal pressure" for both parties to try and keep themselves to it. May not stand up in court, yet does provide some guidance on what the two of you should do.

What do you think?
