Major/Minor Corrections: Deadlines and Re-registering
S

The rules and regulations vary for EACH uni, and sometimes for each department so i would be dubious about taking advice from this forum (yes, i am aware of the irony of ADVISING you to do this...)

I've heard of some situations where minor = 3month deadline; major = 6 month deadline; resubmit = 1-3 years.  I know for a fact this is not the case at my uni.

hahaa i think this is funny

Dealing with guilt
S

Guilt is the price you pay for sanity.

It's important to not work as well as work. The benefit of not working is sanity. The cost of not working is the guilt you feel.

When i way it up, the benefits far out-weigh the costs. Sanity makes you happy, life's about trying to be happy.

How many weeks off/year you can have officialy during PhD studies?
S

i recall reading somewhere that you are officially entitled to 6 weeks holiday a year.

No, this is not at all respected.

you don't have to tell anyone. No one counts and checks how many days you take off or anything. in the majority of cases, you structure your own time. As long as you get your work done, it's fine.

AUGH!!!! Big mistake:(

AUGH!!!! Big mistake:(
S

That's sucks, lab work sucks. I have a habit of putting things into my lab coat pockets, forgetting about them for 3 weeks, discover that they should have been kept in the fridge, and 9 times out of 10 they are absolutely fine. The moral of the story? odds are, it'll be fine. You're not the first person to make a mistake like this, and you won't be the last. It doesn't mean you're rubbish in the slightest.

The most difficult part of lab work isn't the intellectual challenge, the time managment challenge, or even the workload. It's the emotional side of things that is so very tough. Contending with failure day in day out, feeling like a fraud, cocking up, it all takes it's toll.

I'm know you'll figure out what to do to fix your problems. Whatever you do, don't be a coward and avoid going into the lab.
