Help with Endnote - referencing reports

It worked - thank you SO much (the Endnote manual is evil to understand sometimes!!!)

anyone else writing up with deadline looming?
S

I agree with BB - focus on completing and don't worry about papers at this stage.

LSE vs, Westminter (Communication)
S

What exactly is it that you want to do ultimately?

Communications is much more about the individual course than the institution. I used to a journo; the institution I studied at overall was not very prestigious, but in terms of the course it was one of the top three in the country.

Help with Endnote - referencing reports

I'm trying to input some governmental reports into Endnote - they don't have an author, but are issued by a department. Endnote keeps trying to move the words of the department around because it thinks it is listing it surname first...so Department of Homeland Security becomes Security, Department of Homeland

Can anyone help me as it inputs 'as is'???

research proposals ? ?
S

It depends on the area and the funding you want. If you're applying for a specific project that has funding attached, you won't need a proposal. If you're self-funding or applying to a research council (for general funding as opposed to specific project) you will have to write your own

What you have to include in a proposal depends on the institution/research council. Some people only have to submit a few words outlining the general area, others have to submit up to 5,000 words

MSc admission is so hard for me!

Where are you applying? Many popular universities will only take people with a 2.1 or above

Any thoughts on part-time PhDs?

Sorry I'm late - hope I can still help. I'm a PT PhD student (and did my MSc FT whilst working PT). PT studying and working is very very tough and there is no where near the support there should be, but it is far from impossible. If you have been working as well as studying then you already now what it feel like. A PhD is different - the lack of deadlines makes it easier to avoid PhD work and to use your job as an excuse - but if you stay disciplined then there's no reason you won't be finished quickly. My husband worked FT and finished in 4.5 years (a lot of FT students can take 4 years) because he set up strict rules about getting stuff done.

Depressed Newbie - help me please!

As for the teaching - do it. People are competitive about this sort of thing regardless of your enrolled status - you have every right to do it as well

As for conferences, tell them you can't do it. I do. My department keeps organising training and seminars in the middle of the day and I've just told them I can't go. I had the same problem when I was doing my Masters (I worked as well as doing a FT Masters) - I just didn't turn up to the lectures I couldn't go to.

BE TOUGH a your PT status and don't feel you have to make excuses

A PT PhD will not be detrimental to an academic career - my husband worked FT during his PT PhD, finished in 4.5 years and now has an excellent job at a prestigious university. I am also self-funded and PT, studying Politics/IR. It is tough and no one seems to understand what you are going through. All my FT funded friends seem to think I have it easy; I wish they'd try holding down a job and spending every evening studying.

The best thing I did (which also working for a PT friend of mine) was to reduce my working hours to work four days a week - even an extra day makes a major difference. Could you negotiate flexi time with your employer?

a treat for yourself after submission

Of course, you will all be spending every second preparing for the viva...
