Morning!
Well done for calling the scary peep Sneaks! And I like the chocolate idea Naturalme, will def try that nxt time I have to face a challenge ;-)
I didn't manage everything I'd planned for yesterday so goals for today so far:
1) write a conclusion section and email the section to sup - it's already in my head so I just need to organise it and write it
2) finish editing my other chapter
If I manage these, I'll go and write a bit more on another chapter
Hi Squaredot,
I'm not sure if this helps you but I gave up 'my life' 2 months ago when I realised I'd never finish this in time if I didn't. WARNING: what I do is seen as excessive by everyone I know but my supervisors ;-) In practice 'giving up my life' means that I work on my thesis all day every day. I make sure that I eat 3 meals a day (plus a few snacks) and I sleep enough hours. But I don't go anywhere unless I have to (e.g. GP, to buy food, etc), I cancelled my gym membership and all my shifts at work too. Saying that, I allow myself the odd morning off but more recently, with the deadline approaching, I only really don't work if I really need to do something else or I'm too tired that I can't concentrate.
To be honest, I cancelled the gym because I couldn't afford it as well so ideally I'd sleep, eat, study and exercise (it helps with stress!) but remember that, at the end of the day, it's completely up to you!
I think I'm also aware that my schedule is pretty tight and, at present, I have a spare week but I really don't want to hand in on the submission date in case something happens on the day or even before then and I end up not being able to submit (touch wood).
Considering your progress so far, when do you think you'd finish?
Skigs
I don't think there's a set rule about leaving times as it varies from place to place. I agree with others, the best thing is to find out what's best for you. You may need to try a few things to see what works best and you may find that what works next month might not work as well in 2 years time.
Personally, I have always had Gantt charts so I work from a goal oriented approach. I wake up earlyish and work until 1) my concentration starts going, 2) I've accomplished my goals for the day or 3) I've just had enough. I don't have set times and work weekends and evenings when needed but avoid as much as possible as we all need some rest. It's still hard going and definitely not for everyone but it works for me. It's worth noting that I can work from home and I prefer to so I don't get interrupted very often ;-) I can't concentrate when there's a lot of chatting, phones, etc so isolation is my best friend right now!
It might be worth considering what you already know that doesn't work for you?
Morning!
You're both welcome;-)
I really want to finish editing a couple of chapters today as I have been doing bits of work on both everyday for that past week or so (I've lost count lol). I also have other bits and bobs that I'd like to do so I've decided to split my day into two: before and after lunch. Bits and bobs to be looked at before lunch (anything that can't be done today can be added to tomorrow's goals) and I'll concentrate on the two chapters after lunch. I suspect today could potentially be a long day but WHEN (it's not an 'if') I get these done, I'll be well chuffed :-)
Hope you all have a productive day!
I'm really sorry but I don't have that amount of time spare at the moment. I've looked at a few pages and given feedback but you may want to switch off the compulsory responses as it's easier for people to proofread it for you? Also, you may consider not having it at all so it gives your respondents a chance not to answer something they don't want to and just skipping that particular question rather than dropping off the survey altogether.
Well done Squaredot and Naturalme for facing your challenges!
I can't say today has been very productive this end but I think my pace slowed down after yesterday of not working on my thesis. At least I've managed to get some work done today so hopefully things will pick up again soon as I need to finish at least 3 chapters by the end of next week.
Keep up with the good work (up)
Morning!!!
Something came up yesterday and I didn't even manage to stay sit at my desk yesterday :-( but I'm seeing this as a good thing as maybe (just maybe) I've been overworking lately.
It's a brand new day today and I've got my to do list from yesterday to go through. But I think my main goal is to edit one of my discussion sections and edit another chapter as I'm always done with these 2 so it'd be great if I could finish both by the end of the weekend ;-)
I hope you're all doing good!
Hi Batfink! I've only just logged on, long story but, congratulations!! I'm glad your viva went well and enjoy the pub, you deserve it ;-)
Well, as for me, I'm about to start my working day so we shall see how far I get. I'm confident though, will report at the end of the day (or between tomatoes if I start struggling!).
Have a good day everyone! And a nice weekend too! I shall be around as usual;-)
@Squaredot - that is a good point! I'm just getting sick of the thesis and wanting to get it done but I realise that I'm being too hard with myself
I'm afraid afternoon so far hasn't been the most productive either as I've just spent a whole hour and a half talking to my mum on the phone but I needed it and it's definitely helped with the motivation levels :-) so I'm going to make myself a nice cuppa and dive into work 8-)
Well done Batfink!
I, on the other hand, have not done anything, and I mean this literally! At least in relation to the theses. I managed to apply for a job and after seeing Sneaks' success in securing one yesterday, I took the courage and called someone for feedback. The person wasn't there but I'm not happy about not even being invited for an interview for a job I'm overqualified for. Obviously I won't be saying that, simply asking for feedback! I'm not holding my breath for a call back though. The joys of job hunting... maybe I should focus on the thesis first oops
Morning everyone!
I'm pretty tired today, I think my crazy sleeping patterns are catching up with me so I will try not to feel too guilty if I don't accomplish much. It'll be difficult not to be hard on myself as I REALLY need to get a lot done by the end of nxt wk. Goals for the day:
1) Continue amending one of my chapters
2) Review another chapter
3) Add a few more bits to my results
4) Do some referencing - after Ady saying it took some time to get these together I've decided to dedicate a whole tomato everyday to them (thank you Ady!)
Congrats Sneaks! That's not good news, that's excellent news ;-)
Goals for today for me are pretty much the same as yesterday as I'm working on several things at the same time so I just do little bits every day. Hoping to finish a couple of them off today so will be able to add more tomorrow.
@Ady, check you out! Well done you! I didn't even know you could do courses on it.
@Squaredot, I've had big cries too, but yesterday it was just a little one. And I dream about my thesis too if that makes you feel any better, I even have a pad and pencil by my bed in case I get any good ideas or remember something I need to do ;-)
It's nice to know I'm not the only one with a long list, it sort of makes it feel 'more achievable' in a weird sort of way...
