I don't care where it comes from, I don't even look into the fair trade thing.

I shop at next, topman tkmax (occassionally) and burtons. They are not that expensive, and sometimes if I see something i like i will shop at asda and tescos.

Clothes are clothes, all the same to me, as long as it looks good, I don't care about the price, even if it is a bit expensive. But you do get what you pay for in terms of fit and quality.

Tkmax requires too much patience, i get annoyed enough at uni when i can't find what i want. I normally shop at next or topman.

What are you doing in primark danb? i thought that was a birds shop

If you could meet one person regardless of time who would it be?
S

Looking back at my reply, I realised that must look like such an inconsistent and strange list!!!

S

Thats a really good question.

I'm not really sure about who I would meet, as there are several.

Robert Oppenheimer- ask him about the work on the manhattan project (atom bomb-1945) and how his own conscience collided with the demands from the US government. He also worked with some now-famous names such as Rutherford and Bohr.

Marie Curie- Her dedication during her PhD was phenomenal, she rarely even stopped to eat as she was so into her work.

Bin Laden- just to give him a kicking

others include-
Sir Alex Ferguson, George Best, keira Knightley (so fit!!!), Guy Fawkes, William Shakespeare, Kurt Cobain.

There are more but the first two and Kurt Cobain are the ones I would most like to meet.

What are people planning to do proffesionally after their PhD?

i agree with Dan, academia isn't really that attractive at all. You can also make a better name for yourself in you are in industry, people in your field will get to know your name more if you are successful. Not to mention, if you are successful, you will get paid a fortune compared to academia.

I think the pay scale for a senior lecturer goes up to £34k. Think how long it would take to reach that level!!! bearing in mind that the senior scale starts at £27k. Awful, you would need to get a lectruring job first (probably after 2-3 years of lowly paid post-doc work) then it would be ages before you reached senior level.

I know the salary for a senior lecturer sounds really good, but when you consider that will come a good ten years AFTER your PhD has finished. You will probably earn the same amount in half the time in industry.

Obviously I'm generalising a bit, but I doubt this is different for most fields of research

Jewel, if you are considering commerciallising any ideas, I think you have it the wrong way around. Use the university funding to create an idea, then go into industry, running your own business

How much deepth in writing?
S

imagine your report would be like a pyramid. You are at the bottom, with the broad base of knowledge of the subject. Then as you move on up the pyramid, you are narrowing down to the final point (the conclusion). The narrowing down should therefore be the main body of your report, with the broad bit being something like 25%.

and before anyone asks about that strange way of explaining something, I am not drunk or drugged up. This is a bit of advice that was passed on to me, and it has helped me out.

am i supposed to have life....!
S

My first three months have been writting the literature review. So i have gone in as close to 9 as i can manage (normally 10 though!). Then I write a few paragraphs, read some more, write a bit, then have lunch. Then start to feel tired and bored, so I read the news/ sports on the internet, then find a few things to read the next day then sort them in order, then go home. I probably do about 5 hours a day max

I want to write a book, although that will probably only ever be an idea. Then i thought i would open a pub.

Seriously, I will probably work in industry, as my sponsor is a good company and they will probably take me on afterwards (fingers crossed). The idea of academia doesn't appeal, as the research opportunities can be limited (depends whether you take the lecture route i suppose), and there doesn't seem to be the same opportunities to climb up the ranks and earn a large wage.

how much work have you done today?
S

I sat at my desk and stared at it for a while, walked to the shop and got a coffee, then played solitaire for an hour. Went home for lunch and stayed there.

How is everyone doing?
S

I don't look like him i'm afraid. But that doesn't necessarily mean a bad thing.

Have you heard the sad news?
S

No i look nothing like him, just loads better
