What challenges do you think an applicant might face in making a PhD application?

Professional services is what they called administration staff in universities these days, don't cha know!

Minor corrections awarded, slightly confused by report & list
T

I think in general you only have to do what's on the list of corrections. If they told me to correct things in the viva, but didn't put on them on the corrections list, I didn't do them.

Can I use a book's source as my own source?
T

I'm not sure what you mean. If you're asking if you can quote something from Source B you read in Source A, you can, but you should only cite Source B if you have read Source B. Otherwise, you should cite Source A. This is because Source A could be wrong and you won't know unless you have actually read Source B yourself.

Peace of mind

Welcome to the real world.

I don't know what to tell you. This crap happens everywhere. Just don't join in.

My department purposefully delayed my viva and being so unprofessional. Should I report this?
T

Maybe this person just made a mistake?

Honestly, I would just leave it. I know this sounds like a big deal to you because it's your viva, but in the grand scheme of things, this isn't a massive issue for the person involved. The Dean will ignore you or best case scenario, apologise. If anything is said to the person who made this error, it will be simply, be more careful next time, and to the person's manager, make sure you have checks in place so this doesn't happen again. It's really not worth your time.

Think you need to be bit more specific. They might not know how to write a personal statement, or cover letter, or proposal, or CV, or they might not know where to find a PhD supervisor, or funding, or many other things.

Is a PhD possible with Undergraduate Distinction and an upper 2:2 for Masters?

I know there's the MPhil-upgrade route for PhDs, but looking at the social sciences, they all seem to want a Master's as part of the entry requirements. Indeed, some AHRC and ESRC scholarships are for 4 year (1+3), intended for undergrads to complete a Master's and PhD. Whatever happened to the MPhil route?

I don't know about social sciences specifically, since I'm in Biology, but yes, it's going that way in Biology for the DTPs as well. So, the first year is technically a masters. I think this is just so you can leave after the first year and get something though, I don't think you are actually awarded a masters if you complete the PhD. Correct me if I'm wrong on that.

For Biology, requirements are just a 2.1, but higher than this or masters or work experience will give you the edge over other students.

Sorry I just got your message. That is correct I got a first in my bachelor's degree. I've been asking some of my friends who I went to Uni with and they mentioned that I can go straight from undergraduate to PhD, which was complete news to me. Is this accurate information?

Yep, you don't need a masters to do a PhD. It does help to make you more competitive though. My supervisors subsequently told me that was one of the reasons they offered me the PhD over others.

Edit: is it possible to rescue the situation with a really good dissertation?

Only if this boosts your grade. Most of what people look at when they review candidates is the CV and cover letter. They tend not to scrutinise transcripts. But then again, I've only seen the final candidate choices when deciding who to invite to interview, so maybe this is done early on in the process, I don't know.

I always recommend not doing a PhD unless you have a solid 2:1 in your background but it's your choice.

Solid 1st I think you usually say.

PhD Funding in UK for International Students
T

The reply on that other forum is correct. It's extremely rare for the UK to fund non-EU students. You need to search on findaphd.com and look for ones that will fund non-EU students. If they agree to fund you, this is then guaranteed.

Poor communication from potential supervisors

I wouldn't say professional company, more like professional spammer.

Supervisors as co-authors but relationships sour
T

Just make the changes you want, you are first author, you have last say. I didn't make all the changes that were suggested to me for my papers. Whatever I don't agree with, doesn't get changed.

Going forward, it's going to be tricky. There's no easy way around it. Even if you request full change in supervision, they are still going to be on the papers though right?

Publishing and conferences

Yes that's fine. I've seen lots of people do this.
