Coloured diagrams in thesis?
T

I made mine very colourful. I bet the examiners hated it!

Seriously though, a bit of colour is good. I printed mine at uni for free.

And yes the examiners will get a soft bound copy of your thesis (printed by you, sent by the uni) prior to your viva.

google question

No, you probably have something in your browser settings that means your previous agreement isn't being remembered... I don't know what this something could be though!

some help in job application please
T

I would apply anyway, and yes your PhD counts as relevant years. Good luck!

Not heard after postdoc interview - OK to email the PI?
T

Yep, that's the main thing, you still have a job!

Not heard after postdoc interview - OK to email the PI?
T

I would send the email Thursday or Friday.

After my PhD interview I heard back after 4 hours and after my postdoc interview the next evening.

I would email him and HR and ask... you never know which one may reply first if you need to know urgently!

Submission tomorrow! Any last minute advice?
T

Quote From Barramack:
There is a big difference between the odd typo and typos every few sentences. There isn’t any excuse for the latter. It is the responsibility of the student to have their thesis proof-read it prior to submission. You will find that while typos by themselves won’t get you an R &R or a fail, there is a chance that a less benevolent examiner could become frustrated enough to recommend an R&R over major corrections for instance.

Well some people aren't very detail-oriented, so proof reading isn't easy, and when someone else does it with track changes, sometimes the student then finds it hard to go and correct the things that are overlooked when using track changes, such as extra spaces between sentences. I think this is especially true for students whose first language isn't a European one.

I do agree with you though that he was lucky with his examiner - many examiners wouldn't have even examined it I think, and especially wouldn't have awarded minor corrections!

Changing supervisors at 14 months.......
T

You really do need to talk to your supervisors about how you are feeling too. Try to do this on a day when everything is going good so you are not frustrated or emotional, as this will not come across well. You could make a list of things that you want to mention and practise saying them to your supervisors so it doesn't feel strange when you discuss with them in person.

Yes proofreading is important... but a single typo is neither here nor there when it comes to passing and failing a PhD. And nor is an error every sentence, and one of my international friends can attest to!

Haven't heard back after job interview

They could just been slow or you may not have got the job. You should email the administrator and ask for an update.

You could also check with your referees whether they sent the references.

Presenting other people's work at a conference
T

Yes I see what you mean with those other cases. Authorship sure is complicated!

Presenting other people's work at a conference
T

Thanks Rina, the problem is I'm not sure that I value my supervisor's opinion that much because she tends to place postdocs above the PhD students so I think she will tell me to put my name first, when I'm not sure that's the right thing to do.

I've spoken to the PhD students and they said they don't mind either way. I don't care about being first author either, because I don't feel it's my work and I'm just using it as an excuse to go to the conference anyway!

I will be making the poster though and writing the abstract though.

I'm just not sure what is the conventional thing to do for new postdocs in this situation.

So I have the opportunity to submit an abstract for a conference, but as I have only been in my postdoc 6 months, the results I will be presenting will mainly be the work of PhD students in the lab.

I'm not sure what to do about authorship. Should I put myself as first author, but make it clear the work isn't mine? Or should I list one or more of the PhD students as first author, and list myself as the presenting author? My PI will be last author.

PhD public policy: Profile evaluation
T

Are you looking for funding? Do you know if your scores are competitive?

In the UK, you do much the same as in the US, write a proposal and send it to a suitable supervisor and see if they have any funding or see if they can apply for funding. Or you look on findaphd.com for projects that already come with funding, but most are only funded for UK/EU students.

Most people on here are from the UK and in any case, you need to narrow down your search a bit before people can advise you. Think of where in the US you want to be, or come up with a list of unis yourself and look at the info on their graduate web pages.

I wouldn't worry, I'm sure we have all done this! Be honest with your advisor, and just take it as a learning experience. We all make mistakes.
