Not sure which would be the best to get but I would avoid getting an acer laptop.. I have one and my other half has one; they are both breaking down and both fairly slow which I think is due to all the background 'management' programs that run on it.

I would definitely try to get one with XP, I find Vista an awful operating system with a variety of compatability problems and I would never want to get a laptop that runs it.

Sound comments there bonzo.. I think the nature of the staff, the university and city itself along with the actual project should have a greater influence over rankings.

I think that you will find ranking tables here http://www.hero.ac.uk/, but be aware that the RAE was last published in 2001 and there is a new one due out sometime soon for 2008 so the university rankings are likely to change.

Rankings are one thing but like the previous post says you have to think about supervisors etc., I would also suggest looking into student satsifaction surveys to see what the universities are like in terms of facilities, support etc.

It can be difficult, but it gets easier with practice. I have a very simple sentence for what I am doing which is 'Yakult for chickens' which satisfies most 'lay people' and then if they want to know more I can go into more detail... Although sometimes I can go off on one and start talking about the ins and outs of everything I am doing with which I can bore people half to dealth lol.

Best thing to do is send him an email containing the review and just apologise to the guy for the previous email saying you emailed him the link by mistake.

A few years ago the person I was dating was next to my dad in my mobile phone book and I once messaged him something I shouldn't by mistake.. That was very embarassing!

Its a tough call really. My main supervisor says that it is good to get your work published before submitting your thesis as once it has been peer reviewed it is easier to defend in your viva and so he wants me to get some papers ready over the next few months and then I can bulk them up afterwards to put the info in my thesis.

In your case I think the best thing to do would be to try and get both supervisors together so that they can come to a happy medium rather than you having to decide which supervisor's advice to follow! But ultimately it is your PhD so I guess you have to think about what you want to do.
