Ooo I didn't know about the 16 hour rule!

I am funded by the BBSRC so I assume the EPSRC will work the same way. The way it generally works is that you will get in the region of £12k-£13K to live off in the form of a stipend from the EPSRC which is just for you to live on, the fees are then paid for by the research council from a separate budget so you don't need to worry about it. As for the uni's estimated living costs, this is just a guide and it doesn't reflect how much you get from the research council.

I didn't get anything from the BBSRC regarding money untill a month or so before I was due to start and so i was worrying like you are!

I know this feeling well. Usually when i have been away the first week back is a complete write off as I get bugger all done and have to work out the meaning of all my little notes that i left myself before going away! From the sounds of it you sound on track and just going through a post holiday lull, you will probably be fine after the weekend.

When I want to focus my mind back on my work I make lists of things I need to do and then work through it. Then I do the most appealling things on my list first to get back into work mode then once i get started i can tackle the less appealling tasks.

Work is going fine.. starting my 3rd year in october so the finish line is coming into view.. so a bit scared about starting the write up! Other than that life is good.. plodding along as ever :-) How is the writing up coming along?

When I started my PhD (molecular microbiology) I was unfamiliar with alot of the techniques and equipment. I was asked if i knew how to use them and I admitted that i didn't and so they taught me. It is simpler and easier to ask for help and be taught how to do something than faff about trying to work it out for yourself.. Don't be afraid to admit you don't know how to do something..better that than to try work it out yourself and break something!!
