Ooo I have another one after this morning.. people who use your bench when you are not there (that's not a problem) but then don't clean up after themselves meaning you have to tidy up before you start work!!

Haha I agree with you on the Jimmy Carr thing.. I don't find him at all funny and he has appalling comic timing.

1. People who don't acknowledge when you hold a door open or something for them

2. Drivers who don't indicate properly

3. Letting agents who say 'Check our website' when you ring up to enquire about properties they have.. Then when you do check the website and ring up again only for them to tell you 'Oh no that house has gone'

4. The fact I can't seem to find Cadburys Wispas in the shops anymore

5. People who choose to come to the UK to study then spend all the time being negative and scathing about how bad it is here (Although this is mainly directed at one girl in my research group lol)

Rant over lol.. It's been a hard day!

is it too late to apply for a biological science PhD now?
T

There still could be studentships available for admission later this year you just need to search around for them.. As for funding, I got a 2:1 and got funding. I think the BBSRC stipulate at least a 2:1 for funding.

hayfever...! anyone else suffering?
T

I get hayfever :o( Some antihistamines do make you drowsy as they affect the histamine receptors in your brain due to them being non-selective. I take loratadine tablets (clarytin but boots do their own brand of these) which don't seem to make me drowsy and they do keep my hayfever at bay.

Admissions Staff - A rant
T

Before I started my PhD I had a temp job at a uni in admin/admissions funnily enough in the north and I have to admit that some of the staff really didn't give a sh*t about the students and were just there to do their 9-5. I wouldn't be too put off by them its nothing personal alot of the women I worked with had been in the job for years and they had no real qualifications and so they felt stuck in a rut as younger people with more qualifications would come in as their line managers and they didn't like these 'new' ideas.. In addition I found that because of management changes and funding influences they were under the impression that 'things aren't as good as they used to be'.. I found it quite amusing as they were like broken record players, however I can see how frustrating it would be if you are trying to get information!

Haw can i get my PHD from Eurpoe?
T

Hi Love, well to get a PhD in europe you need to look for projects at universities offering your area of interest. If you are not from an EU country you might find that you will have to find your own funding as most EU scholarships are open to EU nationals only. Look at the project pages on findaphd.com

Studying, Working and Living in London
T

I lived in London for my undergrad degree.. I found it difficult to adjust at first, I come from the Dales and so it was a huge culture shock, but after about 6 months I settled in to London life and enjoyed it.. Its a great place as there is always something to do. But be warned I found that most London inhabitants are quite unfriendly in comparisson to us northerners As for getting about, the tube is not that cheap really, but they do the oyster card thing which works out OK. When I was in and around central London I just normally walked as places aren't usually that far away from each other. I would never personally consider riding my bike around London due to the traffic. Where are you going to be based?

Chocolate and tea...
T

Mmm I want chocolate now.. my local 24 hr shop doesn't have and Green and Blacks grrr!

2.1 and Masters...a waste of time??
T

Well I don't think its esential to do an MSc to go onto a PhD.. I went straight on to do a PhD from my undergrad degree.. Any reason why you applied for a masters rather than going for a PhD?

I don't think there is a problem asking the organisers about why they ask for a 2i

after finishing my paper...I got flooded
T

It floods because God thinks we need a bath

Any advice for PhD interviews?
T

I wore a suit to my interviews, I think it sets a good impression.

I made sure I read a few articles relating to the project and made sure I had a basic idea of any techniques that were mentioned. It would be a good idea to make sure u know your dissertation, I was asked about mine in all of my interviews. I did mine on a virus, and at one interview one of the guys was a virologist and he asked me alot of questions on it.

I think one of the most important things to be able to answer is 'Why do you want to do a PhD?'.. from my experience I picked up that motivation can carry alot of weight in interview. I was also asked about what my impression of PhD study was.. Its a bit of an open ended question but I think they wanted to make sure that I knew it wasnt going to be an easy ride.

Anyhow.. Thats all i can think of for now, hope it helps!

Starting PhD next week
T

I'm in biological sciences, I started mine last October and didn't need a book or anything. Basically my first week or so involved being introduced around the research group, having tonnes of inductions talks and safety talks (don't drink bleach etc.). Then I had a meeting with my supervisor and advisor to discuss my project and talk about what techniques I knew, what I needed to brush up on and what I didn't have a clue about. Lab work wise I just got to grips with the basics again as I hadn't been in a lab for a couple of years. Don't be afraid to say that you don't know something, better that than trying to make it up as you go along.. Erm.. thats all I can think of.. What you doing to be looking at?
