Just out of interest what is the research project you are going for?

The funding for me is fine.. I am doing a CASE studentship so I get an enhanced stipend. The current BBSRC stipend is £12,300 tax free and then the CASE enhancements can be anything from £2,500 upwards on top of that.. Have you been offered something at Roslin?

I am at one of the BBSRC research institutes like Roslin and I enjoy it here. I am affiliated with a university but as of yet I have had nothing to do with the uni other than attend a few training courses. Being at an insitute usually sets you away from the 'uni-lifestyle' and it is more like being in a job. But that has its upsides as I feel I get treated more as a colleague rather than a student. There are options for me to undertake the demonstrating roles etc at the university if I want to and I would imagine that is the same at other institutes.

Had my hair cut and feel WEIRD!
T

I had mine cut today (granted not as much as yours!) it was long for me (about 4 inches), and I quite liked it a bit longer.. I asked for a general tidy up and just a little bit of thinning out and shortening; like an inch or so off.. now its about an inch long overall and I don't like it! I think he got a bit over excited!

But on the plus side means I wont have to go again for a couple of months!!

Student already decided before interview
T

I had that a few times while applying.. There was incident like yours, I went for interview and was between me and a current undergrad, needless to say he got it despite the fact he still had to finish his disertation and sit his finals whereas I already had my degree plus I was much better qualified for large parts of the work.. It p*ssed me off at the time but its just part and parcel of the whole PhD hunt unfortunately.. This could be wrong but I am sure I heard that by law they have to advertise funded studentships regardless of whether or not they know who they want to do it. So don't be too down hearted and don't take it personally.. Its very frustrating but dont let it put you off.. Good luck
