Applying for a PHD
T

When I was applying I sent a covering email with a copy of my CV to the supervisor. Then the admin department or supervisor would get back to me if they were interested.

I heard something about that.. its a whole seedy love triangle thing.. Sanders is dating Little Chef... but Ronald had a once night stand with Little Chef which Sanders found out about when having a chat to Wimpy in Pizza Hut.. There was a huge Hoohaa so now Sanders hates Ronald and they both get heated in oral exams and they take it out on the examinee.

Applying for a PhD - but no journal access 8(

When I was looking for journals when applying I asked friends who were still at uni to download papers for me and email them on to me.. Any chance you could do that?

Chocolate?

Up and down days are normal in whatever you do, so don't be downhearted. I came in early today with a view to getting lots of stuff done.. so far I have read half a paper, been on here, facebook and myspace.. Maybe an extra hour or two in bed would have been better!

Is anyone actually happy?
T

I am happy with mine so far and I started in October. There are days where I get daunted by the whole thing and wonder if i am cut out for the job, but i think thats fairly normal. The people I work with are really nice; strange and quirky in their own ways but they are all friendly..

lab politics? friends or foe
T

I've been really lucky, as everyone in my research group is really friendly and have been happy to help.

But I know of people who have had a bit of a rocky start.. I think its just a case of carrying on being friendly with hem.. They will come round eventually lol

Whipped? WE used to dream about being whipped.. We used to have to get up 2 hours before we went to bed, spend 36 hours a day in the lab 8 days a week.. When we got to the lab our supervisor used to break conical flasks over our heads and make us drink acid.. Try telling that to the young ones today, they wont believe you.. Eeee how times change.

If you don't like the comments on here then the simple answer is not to read them. What is the problem if people come on here to chat to fellow students for a bit of light relief, you can't do research 24 hours a day.

I did not do a masters, some supervisors don't see the need for a masters if you did well with your undergraduate degree.. You either have the ability to do research or you don't.

The fact that PhDs are completed in a shorter time here is no way indicative of poor quality. If that was the case then why is a UK education still highly sought after worldwide? Its a bit out of order and narrow minded to slate a sucessful and popular education system simply because its different to your own.
