It can be a painstaking process pinning down a project that involves exactly what you want to go into.. I know I did when I was looking.. My field is microbiology and so first of all I had to decide on viruses or bacteria and then decide what area of it I wanted to research.. I found my area of interest became more defined after I had been looking at studentships for a while

Are you doing temp work now Matthew82? I was doing temp work at a college while I was applying for PhD's its not ideal but luckily I was able to imply that it was useful with the transferable skills etc.

I am doing biological sciences with BBSRC funding so I am notsure if it is exactly the same for your area/funding .. but I got my studentship without having a masters.

Alas lab toys.. I tried to convince my supervisor that a 42" flat screen TV, a games console and DVD player would boost lab morale and thus increase work output.. but funnily enough he didn't go for it.. I think I will hold off on suggesting the group trip to Australia for now hehe.

I did OK this year.. But one year when I was about 14/15 I was given a cast iron door stop.. Its every teenage boy's dream present!

I say go for it.. you have nothing to lose plus you don't want to put all your eggs in one basket just in case something goes tits up with your preferred studentship.
