APA referencing question
T

Hi all

I can't seem to find the answer to this when I google, so does anyone know... if you are referencing a published assessment in the text, do you need to state it is the first edition (i.e., when others have been published after)? I somehow think you shouldn't unless it is a later edition, but am not 100% sure. Does anyone know?

Cheers

A problem with this article is that it does not frame the debate within the dynamic context of UK politics (just my humble opinion). We have to remember that current and future elected UK governments can and will make decisions about university fees. And this is the same of course for other EU (and non-EU) countries across the world. Fees can and will change.

Hope it is OK to be critical : )

Thanks for posting. Good to know that that Erasmus is independent of EU membership!

Need support in picking a PhD title/area

Hi Friz

I agree that the above are very important considerations.

Regarding the topic. Did the Masters go well? If so, are there any academics you worked with/were taught by who you could talk to about potential topics or more general advice? That is what I found most helpful, as once you have someone who is willing to support you, they can give you guidance and help you secure a place or funding, as well as giving feedback on your proposal/development of ideas.

What's it like teaching for the first time?
T

Every class is different. I was teaching 5 seminars each week (all the same content - what a bore), and each class always went so differently. I basically stuck to the plan but whereas one group were enthusiastic and participated, another would be quiet and you'd have to work really hard to get them to contribute. Then next week it might be the other way round. Videos work a treat. A sense of humour is good too, once you know them a bit. It's fun! My only advice is prepare well (e.g., activities and back up activity in case you finish too soon) and enjoy yourself. Everything else will fall into place.

In my MRes I had ideally wanted to dedicate about 10h per credit as AOE26 has said. But when it came to it, it was so full on that that was impossible. I ended up dedicating about 4h per credit I'd say, and less than that for the larger modules (e.g., >20 credits).

Transcription madness

Doolally is exactly the feeling! I don't use the official pomodoro technique, as I am a pretty strict worker (generally), working with set short breaks etc. I don't think I can apply it to my transcription. When I feel like screaming and getting up from the desk, or browsing the web for a longer time, I just have to. Even though I know it'll take me longer.
Good idea about getting rid of the "transcription phase". I need to stop letting it build up and do it "as and when" it comes in.
Have a good weekend all.

Cheers both! I intended to do it as I went along, but it builds up so quickly, boo hoo!

Any suggestions on ways to motivate oneself when doing a tedious task that feels endless?

I have a load of transcription work to do (and in some detail too - pauses, overlaps, etc).

I'm thinking of putting a rewards system in place (e.g., a rolo for each completed transcript... each one takes approx. an hour - but there are loads of them to do, and I don't want to end up with no teeth).

Advice with Word

OK. I was going back and forth between versions so I am not sure which transition was causing the problems. New to old, by the sounds of what some of you are saying.

I will play around with which format I save in and see what happens.

Upgrading is an option I strangely had not thought of!!!
