Submitted manuscript awaiting recommendation - what does this mean?

Quote From pm133:
The quality of the feedback won't necessarily be dependent on the journal's impact factor. What bothered me about higher impact journals was the length of time needed to publish and the attitude of the reviewers. I found feedback to be unnecessarily snobbish with higher impact journals. Altogether it was a hassle I could do without.

I think it can play a role. The particular journal I submitted too was one of very good quality - based on what I get from reading the papers more than an impact factor alone. Basically, I wanted to get feedback from the likes of those who publish in it (and reviewers often tend to be those who publish similar work in a particular journal) and its editor, as I figured their feedback would be helpful in bringing my work to a higher level. In terms of hassle and snobbery - thankfully, there wasn't any of that on this occasion.

Congratulations alexandercarey! You must be so relieved! I will try to remember your advice when my time comes! : )

Postgrad checklist: what to ask when picking a PhD
T

I fully agree with all your questions pm133 and wish I'd asked them myself! As for being off putting, I don't think so. Asking such questions would indicate that you give a damn, you're sorted, and you want what's right for you. Maybe the approach would matter though... a casual chat where these things come up would be preferable!

Can you recommend good editing/proof-reading service, please?
T

These are brilliant (I used to work for them and the feedback we got was excellent), and they cover all areas of science:

I recommend the basic standard service (still very very good) unless you're rich!

Experienced or inexperienced supervisor

All else being equal, the more experienced one of course. :)

Experience in organizational psychology

Does your uni have a careers service? That would be a good place to go. Also, ask about mentoring. Some unis have mentoring services where alumni offer placements (or just distance mentoring in some cases) to current students. I guess this could be done remotely, if your UK uni offers it.

I was wondering the same thing, but actually maybe this is a legit poster (though an odd question for this forum).

Quitting current PhD project after a year and trying to apply for new project at different Uni
T

Hi Theint

It is certainly possible to do this. I have a friend who switched PhD and uni after about three quarters of a year. I think the thing to do is move quickly. Have you found another potential uni and supervisor? This is the most important part. You might have to elaborate on why you want to come there in a bit of a creative way, as it will not go down at all well if you criticise the previous place and supervisor (even if they are are valid criticisms - just keep them to yourself and it'll be better).

Also, have you considered other options? Do you think that it is something you could adapt to? I mean, personally I wouldn't know what to do I think, if my supervisor kept telling me to do things that were clearly wrong (are you sure?), and wanted to meet with me weekly for basically no reason. That would drive me mad. Is there a supervisor in the same place who you could switch to working with? I know you've described important limitations of the lab itself, but perhaps those could be rectified. We sometimes receive school wide emails where someone is requesting to borrow equipment from other departments/labs.

All the best and sorry to hear of your plight,
Tudor

Poster Abstract
T

Yeh, I've done two things along those lines. In the first case it was similar to what Pjlu has described - except mine had no pilot data. It was basically a proposal in poster format - no results. Then in the second case, I wrote an abstract and submitted it and alluded to what I thought the results would be. Then by the time it was time to present it, I had some results, so I added them (and also there was an opportunity to update the abstract at that particular conference - so I did that too).

Just submitted my thesis, can i publish part of it? any advise on how to do it

Pm133, I think you have found your new calling! Sniffing out bots! Reminds me of Del Spooner from I, Robot! Carry on valiantly serving humanity and sniffing out bots! Just be careful (if you've seen the movie)!

What I find funniest and most annoying at the same time is the way that they reply on here in a completely off-topic I'm not listening to you this message has been copied and pasted and we post it everywhere and anywhere we can kind of way. Really makes you feel that you are interacting with human beings who have valuable and legitimate services to offer!

If I'm offered the job, take it?
T

That sounds like very good advice!
