They were most likely Chinese laterns. There was I thinking someone/something had heard my celestial cry for help with my work...with a shared interest in what I'm doin'. Bugger, because they could have helped me with my research - rather lack of.

Hehe, look what makes it to the front page of the Sun tomorrow...http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/ufos/article1336870.ece

It's a pity it's in The Sun of all papers, but I wonder if there's any truth in it? My rational scientific mind says 'no'. :-(

How upbeat am I?

A dynamic and persuasive go-getter indeed! Do you then also have the additional problem of acquiring funding, after you've decided which one of the many phds you wish to take, or have you/will you have similar success with that too (if it's an issue)?

Cheers A116 for your help, I'll give those a gander and I'll see if my library can get me that main book through inter-library loans. Oh and Aloha, cheers for the soya bacon forum, but I only eat the real stuff - it's by far enough. Crispy and tasty, not pallid and flaky.

Hehe, sorry for drawing you all in to this thread in such a Machiavellian way but I'm a bit stuck and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good book for performing structural equation modelling. The emphasis definitely needs to be on the practical aspects, explained as simply as possible, as it's a dirty thing that I intend to do once and never again! If anyone can recommend such a book, I'd really appreciate your input. :-)

stipend???? do i have to pay it back?
W

I wouldn't think you'd have to pay that back, imo. Wikipedia says it best: "A stipend is a form of payment or salary, such as for an internship or apprenticeship. Stipends are usually lower than what would be expected as a permanent salary for similar work. This is because the stipend is complemented by other benefits such as accreditation, instruction, work experience, food and/ or accommodation. Universities usually refer to money paid to graduate research assistants as a stipend, rather than as wages, to reflect complementary benefits".

How to economise

Well, there's no point worrying about the multidimensional consequences of meat production because I'm not sure budget meat will be 'budget' for long As a fellow listener of the excellent BBC Radio 4 programmes, I've been led to believe that meat will be a pricey way of getting protein into one's diet in the future; there's just not enough land and they fart too much. I've tried being a vegetarian in the past, during my more reflective and ethical times, but it doesn't agree with my constitution. It'll be my wallet that has the final say though...

Mmm, yum. No offence to vegetarians but cheese burgers - flippin gorgeous. Jouri, may I congratulate you on being a man of taste. You can even get them on a budget: Rustlers burgers are a quid each in ASDA and Tesco and you can get 4 Snacksters cheese burgers for £1.29 in your local Netto. And then, it's just 80 seconds to heaven.
