Forgive my ignorance but can you not write up the first year of your PhD work as an MRes?

Dear glorious friend of great significance, I have thought long and hard about your plight to find an appropriate title to your PhD. I have good suggestion though. Write down key words that concern your PhD, so computers, management, funding, fun, software, and then arrange them into a symmetrical shape. Then buy a 'rotating dial' from your local DIY and place it in the centre of your symmetrical word shape. After this use a dice to spin (a score of 1 equals 1 spin, 2 two spins and so on) the rotating dial to choose words for your title. You should be able to form some amazing spontaneous, random and original titles.

Have to say, I'm not sure if a lifetime of academic bondage is kinky enough for me Having said that, it's much better than the jobs I've had in the past, such as pot washer, telesales (breast cancer insurance salesman) and shirt presser. Suppose I'll have to take the rough with the smooth.

Posts like this are ace I think. I read them, have a good laugh and then get back to work with renewed confidence and vigor. It reminds me that there's always someone in a worse position or even more foolish.

Yes, I did! I was just finishing for the night and then my room decided to shake, rattle and roll. I've heard it was 4.7 on the ol'Rickter scale. Didn't like the sensation one little bit. Imagine if it was a really powerful earth quake though? Would be terrifying.

Blimey, I do feel better now! In fact, I don't know why I've even moaning because I haven't had to pay a gargantuan library fine, buy multiple books or pay a small fortune to travel to a conference. Still, if I make it through my first year, there's always the following years.

Yeah, I'm in a similar predicament and having to fork out more and more because my library seems to have less and less. It's just when my wallet hurts from it I hurt too hehe

Hello all, I've just had to spend about £100 of my money on a damn book that I've been waiting forever to receive from the British Library. I'll probably never ever in a million years look at it again when I've finished my research! So, though it may be modest by comparison to many of you in this forum, I seek solace by asking whether any of you have had to spend anything similar (or more?!)on something related to your work?
