Well done, Rick! Don't forget to take a break now, rest and reconstitute, before getting ready for the viva. Don't forget to let us all know when your big day is!

Dispatcher: too many Kalms and coffee or something? I'd love to read the conclusions section in your thesis, if that's the conclusion you arrive at from reading the thread title...;-)

Actually, I've just reread the thread title :$ I read it as submitted too. Apologies dispatcher - I'm the one on too many Kalms and coffees it would seem (up)

And that in itself isn't enough for a PhD either - it's as much about endurance as it is about intellect.

Back of the net, DanB. Having had personal experience of what you discuss, Iano, I would say that your experience is a perfectly normal one. Despite your high level of qualification, you were likely pipped at the post by someone even more suitable, or maybe an internal candidate who had already been marked for the PhD. They still have to advertise it - equal opportunities and all that jazz - but they know who'll be getting it. You probably did nothing wrong with your interview, short of not being the candidate they had already chosen. You'll just have to try again when more opportunities come along. Good luck (up)

Quote From sneaks:

I've got 1534 references - although my topic is HUGE. But I reckon I must have used a lot more - I have only just retreived my copy of endnote from my old house so have been doing without.

1534 references? If each reference consists of an average of 25 words that's...mmm...38,350 words just for references. Sneaks, I'm willing to bet that combined we've probably got most of the World's academic references. We could sell them, pre-typed, to the lazier undergrad students who can't be bothered typing out their own references and don't know about things like Endnote. Probably getting carried away now because I'll be wearing a suit for the first time ever tomorrow, but with my new found wealth, power and influence I could become a sinister and influential figure in academia called Evil Doctor Vancouver...

Getting ready for the start of my conference tomorrow is the major goal I have left today. I have a suit to wear while I give my oral presentation and have had my hair cut, but I think it makes me look like a really cheap, ITV 2 version of James Bond. Keeping on the subject of style, I've only got half a can of Lynx Java left, so I thinking about maybe going out to buy something better.

Okay, I've had a couple of beers, but Eska, if you're going to revive this thread, I insist you watch Rambo 4 - it's on Youtube. I've just finished watching it and it's really good, deserves a Bafta, at least. It highlights geopolitical problems in the world, puts the atrocities taking place in the spotlight and really allows Sylvester Stallone to highlight his acting skills. Expect a full review in the next few days.

'who' not 'how' - I have no 'edit post' function.

You could just pit something really cryptic and understated, like...hmmm...'To the people that helped with with my thesis, thanks' and then to stick the knife into lazy sups and the undeserved then put, 'You know how you are'.

Quote From emaa:

As usual after marriage he is silent all the time. Then started screaming on me and told me that I am a negative person and many other bad things.

Sorry emaa, I hope I'm not being rude to you by saying what I'm going to say. My only feeble excuse is that my fingers are killing me from typing too much, like some inflammatory arthritide, so I'm in a slightly bad mood. But what a selfish knob (not actually swearing mods, so you can't delete it:p). Who does he think he is giving you the silent treatment and then shouting and screaming at you, calling you a negative person. That lad has issues and it's nothing to do with you. You're pregnant and you're doing a PhD. You're not a negative person at all, just under a lot of pressure. If I was you I'd give him a slap and knee him in the groin. But I understand that the situation is more complicated than that.
Just take care of yourself, take no notice of him (because he clearly doesn't understand) and try and do what you can with your work. Hopefully, he'll give you a rightful apology later - and not need to walk head first into a lamp post first. Grrr!

Well, good luck Chrisrolinski. My fingers are hurting so I can't type any more. It's a good excuse for me to wind down and get ready for bed.

Wish I could listen to some music, but unfortunately you can't do it in transcribing hell.

Please, please not the Tories - anything but Cameron. Hung parliament, even Garryck for PM, just not them. I don't want to feel like I'm growing up as an 8 year old again.

Dear I advice you to watch "The Secret" film, and learn the law of attraction. I am sure you will soon attract a very handsome man. I did that with my husband hhhhh:-x:-x

Read the book if you must, but don't watch the programme... It's really, really corny and gives the impression that some magical book was found in a dirty cellar that contains...the secrets...to lifelong happiness. It's a bit of a (turkey)
