Word Count and Drafts (when there is no word count)
A

I think it depends on what you think your supervisors will want. I tended to make my drafts 'final' (sic) products in that I formatted them from the off and tried to get the word count roughly to what I felt was right. However, I know plenty of people who did things differently. One person always tells her supervisor that it's a rough, raw draft and that she is looking for feedback on her ideas as opposed to her writing. Another doesn't format, or indeed include introductions or conclusions with what she sends her supervisor. To be honest, her supervisor has told her that he is not happy with that and admitted that he stopped reading after the first few pages becuase it was too all over the place.

If you're emailing the drafts you could briefly outline what stage the draft is at but I would keep any provisos, explanations etc short, otherwise they might start to dread, or worse, ignore emails from you.

not me but that's annoying for you. I get the emails about pms althouhg the inbox on the left hand side control panel doesn't often change from '0' to '1'. I occasionally click into my inbox just to be sure.

Viva prep

thanks chobba, good tips.

I'm finding the viva prep hard going also - well I should say thinking about the viva prep 'coz I'm not really doing anything:-(

Ditto intheheadplease, I'm a INTJ as well!

First second third

I haven't used first, firstly, second or secondly at all in my thesis; does this mean I'm going to fail???

What I hate is when people use two 'thats' in a sentence; usually one is sufficient. I do however think that I use too many semi-colons as my two sentences in this post demonstrate ;-)

Curiouser, and curiouser...

This comes up as an open access journal so theoretically you should be able to get this article. Here is the pdf of the toc of Vol. 8, No. 1 2011 http://www.ehrr.org/ but your article is not listed. And yet when you google it, it does come as being part of that issue.

Hope somebody can get it for you Emaa; I can't figure it out.

where to start?

Hi Naturalme - to add to what Skig says, you have passed and although your corrections probably seem terrifying, maybe take a deep breath and decide to spend the rest of this week figuring out what the examiners want and how you're going to tackle them. Some must be easier than others so why not tick off a few easy things so that psychologically you will have started and be on the road to being done and dusted!

I have to admit that I am finding it tough to get into my own viva prep - I was so close to being completely burnt out that I have little to no inclination to dip into the thesis. I still haven't opened the hardcopy since I submitted it at the end of Oct! I have looked at my bibliography with the idea of making sure that I was 100% sure what was in there! I only got to 'f' and even that has taken me days of a little bit here, then a little bit there. I also started a new job which took me a while to click into, but now I HAVE to get back into research. I have enough time but not sure if I have enough motivation :-(

The best of luck with your corrections - I would take 6 months corrections if it means the examiners spell out what they want but it seems from reading the forum that that is not always the case. Keep us informed how you're getting on.

Yes you can, you can do it(up)

Terrific news Dr. Alexandra :-) I thought of you earlier and wondered if you were mid-viva! Enjoy the celebrations(up)

Good or Bad?

While my examiners are experts in my discipline, neither are experts in my particular field. In one way good, but in another I am dreading there will be a lot of talk of the big picture and how I fit into it - or not as the case may be!

fab news Dr. Naturalme - I noticed you had gone quiet! Take a break and then tick those corrections off. I'm delighted for you (gift)

That's tough Delta; I applied for loads and loads of jobs, most of which I never heard back from. It's pretty demoralising I know. At least with the ones you actually get a rejection for, you can cross off your list. Have you asked for feedback from any of them? Although, to be honest I did this with a few but the feedback wasn't worth much - "with the volume of applications..." blah blah blah.

Fingers crossed one of the six will come good (up)

Viva date
A

it's not normal in my uni. The most I have heard about is a viva done via videolink but even in that case the student is in their home uni with the external on the laptop on the table!

I got my viva date yesterday (it's also in Jan) and my external will have to fly to me. I presuming he will...
