My mother means well but increases the pressure by saying things like "but you've worked so hard, surely you must be finished now?" and "maybe as you've worked so hard, 'they' will give you a nice job in your uni..." :-s

Hubby: "so if you had to put a percentage on your work, what percentage are you at; 80%, 90%, 95%? :-s:-s:-s

Hey Florence, really sorry to hear you feel so low. Working full time and doing a PhD is no joke, so if you need another year, so be it. Different strokes for different folks and there are all sorts of completion lengths. At the end of it all it's the completed thesis that matters. I can imagine how demorialising it must have been to see your potential external off to do another person's viva but it will be you one of these days and who knows who will be looking wishfully at you.

Thanks for that input Skig and Corinne. It's been on my 'to-do' list for a while now and I keep putting it off. I guess as the glossary comes after the PhD proper any entry would have already been defined and explained throughout the text so maybe that's why they don't seem to have references of their own. I'm just a bit uneasy explaining some of the concepts I have without using references.

I think I'll put it off a while longer :p

if you're using them in an educational context (which I think you are) then I would say yes :-)

In Ireland it's principal not head teacher which is used. Also in Ireland superintendent is used in relation to state exams as in the person in charge of the exam hall, the distribution of scripts, returning completed scripts to exam centre for grading.

Administrator to me applies to an administrator possibly in the Dept of Education rather than a school. Also applicable in third level settings.

So sorry to hear of your brother's accident Cindrella but good to hear he is okay. It must be really tough to be so far away from family at a time like this.

A glossary in a qualitative thesis - what does anybody think? I am not particularly against the idea but am unsure how to go about it. I have flicked through glossaries in books and none seem to include references alongside the entries, and yet how can I compile definitions of key terms without including references. Also, as mine is a qualitative study the glossary won't have technical terms but rather concepts relating primarily to the philosophical orientation of my study. Again, how do I do this without references?

I'd appreciate any thoughts, has anybody else got a qualitative glossary?

Agree with Mamara - I don't think anybody here is going to pick a topic for you. Best advice is to read, read, read and try to spot area that interests you and that you think you can have an impact on. Even when you start a PhD, the early days are usually filled with more reading and refinement of your topic.
