"How not to write a PhD thesis"

hey guys, although my stuff has been read with a fine tooth comb :$ it has been picked apart so much that I doubt any of it is any good. Plus I spotted a typo in the title yesterday, I just couldn't believe it. Can you imagine submitting with a typo in the title - talk about creating a good first impression, not:$

hmmmm

to me, 'Abc, PhD' is an American way of stating the title whereas 'Dr Abc' is the more the norm in Europe. Also, 'Abc, PhD' seems more suitable to me if the person in question is not a practising doctor (as in a lecturer) but neverthless wants the world to know that they have a doctorate!

In relation to style, the more 'modern' way of doing things is to omit punctuation though that is not to say that Ph.D or Dr. are incorrect. As far as I know it is normal to use a full-stop or dot after an abbreviation if the abbreviation does not contain the first and last letter of the word being abbreviated! Hence Doctor is abbreviated to 'Dr' [no full stop] but Professor is shortened to 'Prof.'

particularly the comments about why supervisors can be so darn picky!!

Strange as it may seem, I wish my supervisors had shown at least some evidence of being picky as it would give me confidence that they had read my work. I want to see the back of my PhD but am submitting it with a heavy heart because I've no real evidence to suggest it's any good. By being picky, supervisors are showing that they care (even if it's only for the sake of protecting their own career).

I actually thought of you Delta when I wrote that! However, you could self-assess your thesis under Brabazon's 1-10 reasons for failure and see how you think your thesis stacks up. Her reasons might help...

Maybe some of you have seen this but if not, it's a good coffee break read, particularly the comments about why supervisors can be so darn picky!!

Thanks Skig - interview was fine, actually quite general so difficult to know exactly how it went. It was for an admin-section in a university and as far as I know they are formulating a panel for numerous vacancies - we'll see... One question I was asked was to give an example of when I carried out a reserach project - hmmmmmm, now let's see ... ;-)

Thank you

So glad you posted this thread as I didn't want my name going onto the Postgrad Hall of Fame 'til it's time (if ever!!)

Many congratulations Mamara on your great success - you should feel very proud. Enjoy the celebrations (gift)

help, wireless mouse not scrolling!

bang it repeatedly on the desk. Put the cat near it. Buy a new one.

Tried that, although I only had the dog to hand, no cat. Of course I could put this difficulty into my conclusion chapter in the 'possible limitations' section. I'm sure my thesis would have been much better if the darn mouse had lasted the course ;-)

help, wireless mouse not scrolling!

Just days to submission and my wireless mouse is suddenly not co-operating. The scrollwheel won't, eh scroll:-( Until it stopped working earlier today I didn't realise just how much I use this function. It feels like its lost its thread, if that makes sense.

Anybody know how to fix? It's a microsoft 3000.

Journal article-style table, how to produce?

you can also right click on your table, and then select 'table autoformat' and customise your table into all sorts of styles!

my supervisor said to me recently "oh, the end of PhDs is always like this, haha" - I didn't find it funny :-(

yes, having watched DA, I've strangely considering going to buy appropriate attire and doing my lecture in the style of Mary tomorrow lol.

I'm in a bit of a bind, I have a seminar that students were supposed to present in, all the stuednts in the group have gone AWOL, so have to think of something to fill the hour. I should stick to something around practising presentations, but can't think of what to give them to do!

I'm in quote mode today!!

Lots of you tube stuff on good, bad and horrendous presentations. You could be really mean and spring a five min presentation on them in class, have them pick a title (any title) from hat, give them 10 mins to prepare and get them to do it in class. Have the assessment more about the power of the presentation rather than about content per se. It would also punish those who went AWOL!!

This one is long but inspiring - even the first few minutes are worth watching: The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji5_MqicxSo

Goal 1 accomplished - although I'll have another read through at the end of the day
Goal 2 - halfway through I think.

Is there anyone else around who's submitting shortly and starting to think that their whoole work (or at least the majority of it) is rubbish? Or is it just me:$ I'm struggling to write on stuff that I previously found pretty easy but everything just looks rubbish right now...

HELP WITH AN ARTICLE? PLEASE

Hi Sofoula

I didn't get it either. In my uni, access to Psychological Reports is only available online from 2011 onwards. Looks like it's also available via Pubmed though so might be worth trying to get it that way - I don't have access to Pubmed, sorry:-(

Quite Unhappy

it's interesting hearing others' experiences. tbh, while I have often had to wait ages and ages for feedback, when it's come I have never doubted that it's been read, to the extent that my supervisor is able to refer to sub-sections by reference number! However, it has meant that I have lost all faith in my thesis as I don't think any of it is up to scratch.

Maybe if you asked them specific questions about specific sections, it would give you a better idea if they really know what you have written.
