the area I'm least comfortable talking about; I know what I am but find it difficult to articulate it! In basic terms what is your outlook on life, how do you see the world, what is your worldview? And yes talking about your epistemology and ontology is it; just try not to tie yourself up in knots doing so. If you can, keep it simple, elaborate only if asked. However, never mind your research topic, ask yourself, how DO you see the world?

Lots of good method books cover this in their introduction but I guess you can't beat The Sage Handbook of Qualitative Research. Have a look at the introduction in particular. Available through google books at:

Anyone else with 30th Sept deadline?!

have a look at the one goal thread; I can think of at least six (including me!!) with your deadline. Two working weeks and then we'll be free:-). Good luck (up)

Thank you and update from me

Wow Star-Shaped, double congrats, for the job and submitting your thesis. I am delighted for you. It's more than good luck, it's just reward for the hard work you have put in. Congrats again (hope your cat is pleased as well!!) (gift)

Need a paper please?

I did try Ev the first time you posted but no joy. One library I have access to has it in hardcopy. If you look at the website of the transportation research board itself it says
"A full compilation of titles since the 2002 series of the Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board (TRR Journal) is accessible electronically" and goes on to state "... the full text of as many as 9,000 peer-reviewed papers that have been published as part of the Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board (TRR Journal) series since 1996."

- it looks like 1981 may be tough to get electronically but I could be wrong - I often am! Maybe try contacting them direct - they might post you a hardcopy of the article. I did that with a paper once and got it through regular mail. The website has a contact us section at http://www.trb.org/Contact/Contact.aspx

if it wasn't so long (50 pages) I would suggest taking a snapshot of each page [edit, 'take a snapshot'] and pasting them in as I have done that with a few jpegs and pdfs in my thesis but that might not work with the amount of pages you have.

think you need somebody considerably more technical than me! Good luck with it(up)

2nd edit :$ - I have an appendix that's a pdf and my thesis is still in word format. I did take a snapshot of each page (c10) and it worked fine. No doubt there is a much more efficient way of doing it but it worked for me. I have been working on a full draft document for a while now and have had no probs.

you're pretty close to submission, aren't you? Could you not wait 'til you convert your word thesis to a pdf and then merge the two pdfs?
http://foxyutils.com/mergepdf/# - it's what I'm going to do with mine :-)

Deadline is this summer - let's do it together!
A

@Catalinbond, I know EXACTLY what you mean; I can't wait!

@Dunni, sorry to hear about the job. Rejections are really hard to take (I should know, I've got a drawerfull at this stage!). Hopefully, something will crop up for you soon(up)

great news Batfink, what a relief for you :-)

The One Goal Thread

to clarify :$ not sleeping well due to stress but then I'm a very light sleeper, blame it on four children who never slept the night. Now that three of them are teenagers (and one is nearly 21 :$) it's a different story. Now it's hard to get them out of bed :-s. But no, I wouldn't recommend deliberately cutting back on sleep to squeeze more hours in the day. For me, it's early early morning - the further on in the day it gets the less productive I become. So whatever works

STRESS!

Quote From delta:

Good on your colleague but don't compare yourself. Ady, you had a LOT to contend with and are doing a PhD in good time and with a family to look after and take care of. Your colleague may not have been faced with the same pressures... You'll do it!!!

He didn't though to be fair it's relative I think. Still, I try not to compare myself to others; at least not on a Monday. Tomorrow now might be another matter...;-)

STRESS!
A

@ Corinne: I think, actually, I am now beyond stress and at make or break! If I don't submit by the end of this month I am seriously thinking of reassessing where I'm at. On a positive note my external examiner is onboard as is my internal examiner and my exam board has been passed by faculty (that's what's involved at my uni, no intention to submit form here). I have to take this as a positive sign as it does mean that my supervisor feels I will submit by end of Sept.

Very few people seem to go through this process stress free although a colleague passed his viva last week with no corrections having submitted in 2 1/2 years in just two drafts! His thesis is 72,000 words long and his viva was just over one hour. He really should write one of the those 'how to ...' books as he did his PhD pretty strategically and it worked! We started the same day :$

sorry Kikuka, didn't mean to hijack your thread. Hope you get good news on your corrections soon (up)
