@Skig, I did it myself; I actually have a certificate in proofreading:$

Apologies and an issue: does anyone else feel like they're not good enough for their PhD and not doing it justice?

no worries Zinar; I'm in final stages of my thesis and just about ready to fling it out the window:-s

I on the other hand HAVE proofread my thesis only for my supervisor to completely req a complete restructure of the entire 2nd half. I suspect, nay know :-s that he got me to proofread it to give me something to do, like what you would get a small child to do if you were busy! "Go draw Mummy a nice picture while I paint this room..." What a complete waste of time:-(. I have checked my references however and that was a useful exercise; it took quite a while people...

Left for me is to thread a better narrative through chapters 6,7, 8, 9 and 10 and re-proofread those chapters as well :-( I feel ill:-(

Is it becoming more normal for students to take amphetamines to get them through?

@Zinar7, Was only trying to help:$ I'm really interested information literacy, sourcing and dissemination, regardless of topic

@Zinar7: For a change, try googling but not through google scholar, just regular google. Yes you'll get a whole lot of bumpf but sometimes I find info there that didn't come up in google scholar. OR, try google scholar but make sure to go past the first 1 or 2 pages. Also use the advanced search in google. Is there a research institute or NGO in your general field? Their websites usually have publications which can be useful as points of references to resources that perhaps you are not aware of; the known unknowns as it were;-)

Help - Failure to submit

I would tend to agree with Delta. If you didn't officially 'go off the books' for medical reasons perhaps you should think about doing so now by trying to backdate your medical timeout. If you haven't got medical certs etc then things could be tricky.

As for submitting elsewhere, although unis differ, I don't think you can simply submit your thesis elsewhere without going through the formal procedure of registering and pay whatever fees are owing. You would also need another supervisor to agree to take you on. I know someone who changed unis after three years and then new supervisor said the thesis could be submitted under his guidance, in another two years, so five years in all. I would think your best bet is to sort things out in your current uni. See your postgrad co-ordinator, dean of graduate studies or someone similar for advice and see where you stand.

EndNote
A

A lot of uni libraries would have a version of Endnote - Endnote on the web - which normally is free to use via your library website. What you are being charged for is probably an individual version and tbh the price you got is competitive. Endnote is expensive.,

there is open source [free] software which you can download such as Zotero - http://www.zotero.org/, some people prefer it so have a look around before committing to something.

Any other PhD mums?

Dunni's children are younger than mine so her advice is probably more pertinent. However, I did the whole kit and caboodle with four children (Degree, Masters, PhD) and what I would say is snatch whatever time you can and don't get too precious about noise - you have to learn to work with background distractions. Some people say they can only work in total silence but come on, if you've got children that's just not going to happen! I know I've said it before but it's only when my lads start the scrapping and fighting that I can't concentrate. Other than that - TV, playstation, friends calling to the door whatever - don't really bother me. The 'what's for dinner' mantra can get to you when you're on a roll but that's family life I guess. Anyone on their own raising children and studying, I really admire you 'coz it's will be tough but ultimately rewarding. Give yourself some timeouts but know that they may be short ones. So learn to savour the little things and relish those 15 minutes of flicking through a magazine or record a programme from the TV and look forward to it as your treat. That's what I did, eh do!

Edit: @Dunni, hope the house move went well and that you're settled in. Which was more stressful, the move or the PhD??
