Thanks for those Corinne, they're great :-) I'm drawing up a list today of what you and Sneaks have suggested.

No team, just me which is why I am trying to make sure I have got it all covered and look uber efficient and bamboozle him with my conference organisation knowledge ;-)

Yep, I can get them for you; pm me where to send them

Edit: the first one also seems freely available here, https://webfiles.uci.edu/dmeyer/framnatsec.poc.pdf?uniq=14j9z6
but I can send you the pdf as it's probably easier to read.

Suggestions to cheer up my sister who is writing up

this is at your brother's wedding, right? Maybe try organise to see a film in that week or a bit of pampering such as a manicure? Also, although you need to be supportive, you need to be empathetic as well. I can't bear it when I am trying to explain to family how uptight I am about submitting and someone says "sure you'll be fine, you always get through it in the end" :-s It actually makes you shut up and think 'what's the point, they just don't understand'

You sound a lovely sister :-x

more tips, brill 8-)

I've actually done pretty much all of what you say in one way or another at various different conferences. It's just that it's never been fully up to me. I was part of committee which organised the last one I worked at and everybody but me 'forgot' to rearrange chairs and lecture halls after the conference as per our agreement with campus services:-s.

My former airline life consisted of me 'handling' VIPs so I know all too well about treating people with kid gloves and making them feel special and important. I mean you just couldn't expect somebody to hold their own boarding card or look at the monitors themselves to see what gate they needed to go to :p

My supervisor asked me to assist at a conference for a colleague next month, you know 'man' the registration desk, sort out conference packs, name badges etc. I'm meeting prof. who has arranged this conference on Wed when we're going to sort out what needs to be done. Only problem is he seems to think I know exactly what needs doing - think my supv oversold me somewhat!

While I have often helped out at conferences, I have never been the official administrator. Apart from the obvious, as in turn up and sit at the registration desk, does anybody have any tips for conference organisation? Name badges in alphabetical order - anything else??

At least I can officially update CV to include 'conference administrator'!

I was hoping for end of Aug but ominous silence from my supv means I'll be lucky if I get it in by Sept. If I don't get my draft back soon, I'm going to shriek :-s. I'm considering amending my thesis acknowledgments to be far less effusive about said supv :-(

"...they're terrible for setting off from home really early and being on the doorstep before I'm ready for them!"

Mine do that too, very irritating.

:-(, em I'm not sure, I know to spilt one's infinitives is not good but I don't know if 'to fully explain' is a spilt infinitive. I'll go with Oxford English Dictionaries online - http://oxforddictionaries.com/page/grammartipsplitinfinitive.

I talk about my work being a 'situated snapshot...' but I think once is enough in any thesis!

'However, statistics on their own do not fully explain the difficulties penguins have in this area. Statistical data were supplemented with touchy-feely qualitative data to provide a more nuanced explanation of penguin flying problems...:p

Seriously though, my supervisor is incredibly fussy. Before I started writing it wasn't an area I was worried about, now I'm not so sure. He suggested "interviewee contact information was solicited from the department..." rather than my "the researcher made contact with interviewees".

journal access?

'think' I do but I got it under its German name only, Zeitschrift für ArbeitsmarktForschung - maybe try that. I had a quick peek and I do seem to be able to access 2011 articles. They seem to be in both English and German [in the one paper]. Is there specific paper you want?

ah, errant apostrophes, the joys...

Lynne Truss has some grammar and punctuation exercises online which I 'used' on my most recent tutorial group - I think they all thought I had gone mad!

Thought I did, but I don't - sorry!

Actually it's probably good idea to put the paper and ref details in original post; increases your chances of getting positive reply, I would say.

Guidelines for amount of qualitative data

how long is a piece of string???? Really I think it depends on the topic and how you have gone about things. I have done 60 interviews and ten observations and it hasn't really come up if that this is enough or not so I'm presuming that it is! A colleague has done <30 interviews and has just submitted. He has been told to be ready for questions about the smallish numbers of interviews he has done in the viva; if he can defend it okay, that should be enough. I know somebody who only spoke to five people but they were repeated interviews, really life histories.

Why not read up on the concept of theoretical saturation to justify what you have? Also, is your methodology sufficiently innovative for you to claim that whatever number you have is enough?
