looking for accommodation in Lund/Malmo
A

Nothing ventured, nothing gained...

My son is off to Lund university in Sweden in mid-August for a two year Master's. Accommodation seems in short supply and he didn't manage to get uni-accommodation. Anyone have any ideas how to secure accommodation in the Lund/Malmo area? We've tried the usual websites and hubby and son went over for a couple of days at the beginning of June. One person they met suggested a tent but this option is reserved as a last-last resort :$

Just one more thing (I'm a big Columbo fan!)

Are you on any mailing lists? What about this one http://peaceandconflict.ca/

Hi Liberty (good name considering your topic area!)

Glad I could help at least a bit. It is difficult and confusing. I applied for funding linked to a specific university and was lucky enough to get it and so have done my PhD there. Others I know have decided to go ahead without funding and hope they will get funding after they start. I know people who have sourced funding for their second year, or one girl for her final year. As I say the uni doesn't really care as long as the fees are paid.

A potential prof./supervisor may well be willing to take you onboard but often are very unclear themselves about fees etc. Afterall they are on the big bucks! However, they do get emails sent to them re funding etc so it is a good idea to link up with somebody and while they may not put you in direct contact with a funding source, they may be able to point you in the right direction. As a postgrad myself I frequently get emails sent to me and my cohort about programmes opportunities all over Europe.

Good luck with it (up)

Anyone have access to this chapter? (Psychology / Neurophysiology etc)

I did try 404 but no joy I'm afraid. I do have access to the psychINFO database and found the chapter you're looking for but according to the record the 'format covered' was print; no mention of an electronic version beyond the abstract. Hope somebody else may be able to access it for you.

I don't really know anything specific about conflict studies per se but there is no reason, in theory, why you shouldn't be able to apply for funding as a UK national in one of the universities you mention. If you have a supervisor in mind, you can liaise with him/her about looking for funding. The funding issue doesn't really interest the fees office as generally once the fees are paid that's it. I realise that it could be the difference between you starting a PhD or not but a uni wants its fees upfront, whoever is paying them.

normally people approach the uni first and then go looking for funding. A funding organisation is unlikely to give you the monies unless you can assure them where, when and what you'll be studying. To be honest it's not really a linear process, each step influences the other. I would look at each university individually. Even if they only offer MAs, click into the programmes and see if there are any contacts you can tap into. If they do offer master programmes, they might be interested in somebody who's looking to do a PhD.

Have a look at this link for guidance: it's for a programme in Germany last year but it does give an outline of how you would go about applying for funding and broad thematic ideas for possible projects.

Have you tried the conflict studies reserach centre? It seems to be based in the UK but its 'current work' and 'publications' indicate projects with wide ranging remits. Again, useful if even only for contact info.

Finally, a lot of conflict studies in Northern Ireland. Have a look at those and get some ideas from them.

Hope that's been at least some help:-)

A full draft Star-Shaped, well done - it's a good feeling.

part of me just really can't be bothered any more.

My next goal is to put together a contents page.

Gosh, how I know that feeling. When I did my ToC it was the first time that I really felt I was nearly there - a good feeling. Are you generating a ToC automatically or manually? I tried to do it properly but got tied up into knots and so just did a manual one, with no page numbers - not putting them in 'til it's absoutely good to go. However I would prefer to do it right. What about you?

really slow feedback is demoralising as it's hard to keep the motivation up and to keep moving forward. Sorry to hear things moving very slowly for you Fm. Hopefully in the long run it will mean a smoother submission and viva.

My thesis is back with my supv and he told me to start proofing it for grammar, typos etc. I took that as a positive sign although he has one version and I'm proofing another??? I think I feel a bit like you Fm, a bit trapped and wondering if I will ever be finished with it but hey, we will get through this (up)

Hey all

Glad to see things really looking up for you Pink_Numbers. You're right to call a halt to large-scale corrections. I 'sort' of did the same with my supervisor the other day and he said that it was great to see me taking ownership of my thesis. Thing is, I want him to tell me it's okay not for me to have to insist on it :$ If the viva was on words and volume, I be up there with the best of them. On quality, I'm not so sure.

Slowmo is next out of the traps, then Keenbeen, then you Pink I think? Then those of us who insist that September is the summer ;-)

good luck all :-)

Massive congrats Dr. Dunni on successfully defending your thesis and for being first out of this thread! Your viva sound like it was a tough one so even more congrats on successfully getting through it.

Brill news (up)

ditto :$, have been constantly checking since this morning which is silly as I don't think she had a 7am viva!! Fingers crossed for her :-)

How far in advance did you file your intention to submit?
A

Yikes I'd be in trouble! I have so many things with 'read properly before viva' scrawled on them. I aiming to submit September for a November-ish viva; or at least that's what I've being told. I aim to be a free person in 2012 as well :-x
