How far in advance did you file your intention to submit?
A

From what I've gathered it differs from uni to uni. My 'stuff' is starting to get organised now with a view to submitting Sept (though I'd love Aug, even the 31st). If it takes three months where you're at, do you think yourself that you'll be done in that time? The only word of caution I have is my supervisor advised better to delay submission than have to contact your external telling him/her that your're not going to make the intended submission. That can't help trigger alarm bells off in external's mind.

What about outright asking them if now's the time to file the intent to submit form?

Interview soon, what to expect???

Sneaks' recommendations spot on. The only extra thing I would add is be prepared to demonstrate a willingness to teach modules outside of your own topic. "So how do you feel about teaching..."

GT info help required - Olivia??
A

To update - I stuck to my guns (metaphorical ones) and argued for how I have done my GT research, paraphrasing you heavily Olivia! Didn't quite use the words "back off" but told him that to dispense with the core category was "going too far away from key tenets of GT etc etc. My supervisor listened and replied "Fair enough"

Me - :$

Sorry but it just isn't true!!!
A

Having read and communicated via previous posts, I don't think Delta is bragging or putting others down. That said I completely take Beajay's point that perhaps those of us who are more detached from our topics (myself included) are more than likely fortunate enought to be funded as this is a luxury self-funders do not have. Or perhaps regardless of topic, those who self-fund are passionate about their PhD, the idea of contributing to knowledge etc.

I have found the PhD experience to be pretty relentless and quite debilitating from a confidence point of view so I would disagree with Delta there. As I head out of this PhD I am trying to sell the efficient project management aspect, acquisition of transferrable skills etc to would-be employers - completely without success thus far! I feel like I am highly qualified - for nothing :-(

Maybe the title of the thread stirred things up a bit. What about "Sorry but it is not always true..." might sit better with a wider audience?

Is it polite to cancel a conference presentation and still attend the conference?
A

Academia can be a very small world so although not a capital crime, I don't think it would be a brilliant idea to cancel your paper. What about trying to have a discussion type paper on the problems you encountered? Be honest and admit results are not what you are expecting and focus the paper on possible reasons why. Is your lack of data something you could talk about; is it going to make you re-define your study parameters for example?

Pull the paper if you really feel you can't say anything but I bet you could make a conference paper out of it.

Just wondering if you guys know of a why to check the current university location of a professor. My supervisor trying to contact the external I want and it's not 100% clear on his university website that he's still there! Other staff have phone numbers and emails listed but while his name is there, no contact details are, plus he doesn't seem to have published in a few years. Typical, the one person you want...

Feeling protective of your thesis/nervous of others reading it

yep. to ad to KB's post; I don't really want my supv in my viva either. To be fair I don't think he would do any eye-rolling but I feel I could 'blag' it better without his presence there.

Ditto :-(

I have gotten increasingly paranoid about this over the last while and for me it feels like, the more I learn the less I know. When in college, I am always really careful to minimise what's on screen whenever I leave my desk to go the printer or whatever - not because I think someone will steal it, but because I am angst-ridden over what people might think of it. A friend constantly leaves chapter drafts lying around and I admire him in a way 'coz he obviously has complete faith in what he's done! I was pretty confident about my writing ability at the start of the PhD but not so now.

Well this is it.......last few days (eek)

Hi Dunni

you know your thesis and your topic inside out, you can and will do it! Will be thinking of you Wed morning and checking the forum to see how it went for you - brill, I'm sure.
