Oh Dear Dunni, chicken pox is rotten luck for you and the kiddies. Once the spots 'die' the itch goes so hopefully it won't be too long. Some children can get them really badly; one of mine had them in his nose, ears etc. Plenty of calamine lotion should help soothe them.

I think you're ready for your viva now so just keep tipping away with it and keep in touch with your thesis but you're there :-)

Deadline is this summer - let's do it together!

Come on Pink, you can do it :-)

How do you mean your conclusion was ripped apart? Did you get anything to focus on, were there specific issues to work on to boost the chapter? A postdoc advised a group of us recently that what he did for his Chapter conclusion was copy 'n paste his individual chapter conclusions together into a document, read them through and then structured his conclusion chapter from those. Would it help linking back to your introduction chapter? One thing I have done is re-visit my aims and objectives and then state 'objective 1' was met in Chapter Five..., objective 3 was met in Chapter Five...and gave a few examples where I had done what I said I was going to do!

Anyhow, stick with it, you CAN do it but maybe apply for extension just in case - would be good to have in your back pocket.

You've a lot to deal with but you will get there.

Edit: sorry have just re-read your post and you are talking about chapter before your conclusion - sorry

How many words for qualitative findings?

not having the actual quote it's hard to assess. I try not to truncate quotes as I do think it's playing around with things. I have shortened some but not many. I don't correct particpants' grammar or tidy the quotes up.

It's up on Google books and most of it is visible, certainly I could access Chapter 8.

I'm not sure if I can access ex Springer database link, don't think so - sorry about that :-(

my study is completely qual so it's a bit different from mixed reporting. But my supv said the same as KB's - use more quotes! I thought that I had used a lot already but he said more, more, more!! One thing he did say which might apply was that 'roughly' my findings should match my theory and methodology chapters in terms of length.

I used to have it on a docking station (when in uni) which was good as in a nice big screen and proper keyboard but not so good as in the end it took up too much space on the desk. I now have it propped up on a hardback copy of Alice in Wonderland :$ as I need to have the keyboard at a tilt. At home I have it on an 'e-pad' thing I got in the US. It's running pretty slow lately, just as I come to the end of my PhD - word overload I think, and not just the laptop :-(

Olivia

Thank you so much, your reply is more than I could have hoped for :-).

You're right, I am using Strauss and Corbin not Glaser and Strauss. I own the 2008 edition but only got the 1990 edition from the library so I decided to stick to 2008. There are a few differences but I thought it better to try not to mix the two.

To be fair to my supervisor he used Glaser and Strauss in the mid eighties so he is a GT person but he is not familiar with the spilt in the two camps or the later editions of the GT method[s]. So yes, I will stick to my guns, you're right. He says I'm too apologetic overall so it's something I need to work on come the viva - not one of my fortes!

Thanks again Olivia for such a speedy and utterly helpful reply - much appreciated. I have 'starred' you in the past so can't do so again I'm afraid but please accept these virtual gifts.

Survey Done

Moonblue, when I tried the link the first time it didn't link to the survey. When I tried it later I didn't notice at first that Sophie had edited the original link and thought I was going mad, or too old, or maybe a mixture of both! Believe me, the first link didn't 'link' to the survey - honest it didn't ;-)

I used GT for data collection and analysis. My supv is arguing (with me!) that the 3 sub categories I identified are enough and that I don't need a core category. But, I think I do! After the worry of 'would I identify a core category' I am actually genuinely satisfied with the one I extracted from my data. How can I argue for my substantive GT theory without having a core category? How would it go down with external examiners if my theory formed from sub categories, not core?

Any GT people out there???
