Do your supervisors show any interest in your future?
A

I was talking to a friend about a similar issue last night. We both felt that supervisors, in general, are really only interested in future plans if the student wants to stay in academia. Neither of us felt that this was in a nasty way; rather it is the world they know best. For example, we have lots of seminars in our university and most of them are interesting. However, they are generally by other academics, many of them experts in their field, but academics nevertheless. It would be interesting, I think, for practitioners to also speak to students and demonstrate the 'how' things are done as opposed to the theory.

Maybe I'm understanding you wrong (and apologies if I am) but I don't think asking for a meeting implies any weakness on your part. I have had pretty sporadic meetings with my supervisor - I haven't counted them but only a sprinkling throughout my so far 2 and a half years. However I emailed him yesterday asking for one next week - just to check I'm on the right track. I'll be gutted if I'm not :-(. Out of the blue he asked me if I had thought beyond my PhD. That's the first time he has ever done that so it looks like that's the sort of meeting we'll be having next week.

Wonder if he's going to offer me a senior lectureship?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Rather elderly journal request!

Yippeee, looks like I got it. It appears as part of a compilation of articles so will you just check Dunni, that it is the one you need. I think it is though. I'll send them both to you now.

When you are organising your next meeting, I would ask them then if you could schedule in a bit of time to talk about your plans, or theirs, for after your PhD. That way you won't spring it on them, and you will feel entitled to bring it up at your meeting. Also, you could ask them if they would take a look at your CV and give you some feedback. It will let them know that you are thinking ahead and perhaps prod them into action, either in terms of suggestions or offers for further work.

Random question- how much sleep do you need?!
A

I am in the bed most nights for about seven-eight hours but rarely, no, never get a full night's sleep. Similar to Dunni, children put the kibosh on that. I have no babies now but still constantly wake up. It actually doesn't bother me and I would often unload the dishwasher or put a load of washing on at 3 or 4 in the morning:$ Plus, I have the radio on low all night and often listen to programmes I missed during the day. I'm not an insomniac, just a very intermittent sleeper!

Noise/light from outside doesn't bother me either. I worked shift work for sixteen years, including night shifts, on a fortnightly roster with no pattern or predictability.

My husband who is on shift work loves his siestas on the couch which drives me :-s, "I'll just go for a little snooze..." Men, in my experience (!!) KB, need more sleep than women. I don't know your fiance obviously but I would guess that as he becomes more familiar with his job, he will stop going to bed so early.

Deciding what to call interviewees in findings?
A

Thanks Emmaki :-)

I've gone with a direct swap between my real names and the top boys' and girls' names as posted on the census website. I think I have too many different participants to code them and for it still to be readable so we'll see if it comes up in my viva - as KB says, hopefully the worst that will happen is that I'll be asked to change them. Oh, and convince my supervisor as well :$

Deadline is this summer - let's do it together!

That's great news Dunni, looks you'll be having a relaxing Easter :-)

After the trudge through treacle that was my lit review and methodology chapters and then 2nd edits of same, I am in the middle of writing up my findings. I felt completely lost when I started. Lots of us moan about lit reviews (well, me!!) but at least it's obvious where you start, ie with the literature. I was so confused when it came to my findings that I resorted to posting a pathetic question on the forum asking how to report qual findings. It was embarrassing to admit my total confusion but I got some really useful answers and one in particular, just a rather offhand line by somebody, sent me on my way. Now I am 'finding' writing my findings - I'm reluctant to say easy - but def easier than other parts of the thesis. Wonder if anybody else found the same? I forced myself last week to stop all writing and go back to the textbooks etc and figure out how I was going to report what I found. With a lot of data it's so easy to get sucked into lengthy descriptive accounts but hopefully I have headed that temptation off at the pass. It was a really useful exercise and I would heartily recommend it to anybody feeling a bit lost. STOP, and take stock. I'm working towards having a complete draft by the end of April - some of it will be a first draft, other bits at least a 2nd draft. Fingers crossed, although it makes typing a bit more challenging!!

Hope everybody else progressing well. Pink, if you're reading lately but not logging on, I hope your family are okay and that you got good news. What happened in Japan puts everything into perspective.

Good luck summer submitters (up)
