Have you tried inserting it as a symbol?
http://www.imsc.res.in/Computer/symbols-letter.pdf
Perhaps \boxempty (table 24)
See of the package is predefined...or check whether you need a math package (texycomp??)
An excerpt from the book
Most, but not all, of the symbols in this section are math-mode only. That is, they yield a “Missing $
inserted” error message if not used within $. . .$, \[. . .\], or another math-mode environment. Operators
marked as “variable-sized” are taller in displayed formulas, shorter in in-text formulas, and possibly shorter still
when used in various levels of superscripts or subscripts.
Good luck for your application...5 weeks ago I applied for a PhD and have still not received a reply. This is although I have already met my supervisor, got accepted for funding (I applied for funding 1st, and then I formalised the application through the University)...so all that had to be done was just the paper work...nevertheless I have not received any official confirmation...so I guess during the summer months things really go slower :D
Best of Luck!
Hi...I had 2 phone interviews for PhDs a couple of weeks ago...One was an out of the blue phone call, whilst the other was pre organised. The questions they asked were as any other interview...why do you want to do your PhD?...What would you like to do once you finish your PhD?...some questions about my background etc (I was doing a masters...and they asked where I was in that)...what is important is that you are honest (e.g. I have submitted my masters' thesis, but am still waiting for a viva) and be ready to show that you are interested in the post...I have been given both PhDs (and have chosen one), so I must have done something right...When I went to visit my supervisor she said that one thing that impressed her was that I asked questions which showed I researched the situation (my supervisor works in a department so the website shows she is part of this department which does not do any actual research, but is seconded to another department...and I asked how things will work out)...it is imp to have everything next to you (CVs, cover letters etc...to know what you sent them)...together with a pen and paper, to jot down notes etc...all in all, I really enjoyed my phone interviews...it was one of my first experiences and I was scared...converse normally, but be respectful and allow them to talk (I have a habit of talking over people...so I tried to curb this)...Oh and have a glass of water ready next to you just in case (saw this written somewhere whilst preparing)...
Wish you the best of luck...Hopefully we will both start our PhD together to support each other :D
I do not want to say something stupid...I am sorry if I ight say things that may be obvious...can you perhaps split it into two separate tables?...because I do not think that Latex will ever separate it into two pages...you could try
\pagebreak
at the page break point in the table? Perhaps it would work?
I do not think it should be a problem...I have been offerred a PhD Studentship with a 2:1 BSc, and I am still waiting for my master's results (submitted thesis in the end of June...now the University lecturers are off in August...so hopefully will get my viva in September)...and I know someone with a 2:1 who got a PhD studentship straight from the BSc (no master's) in a prestigious UK university. I think it depends on whether you are the right fit, possible experience in the area etc
To all of you waiting to start your PhD...and waiting for Studentship replies...I would like to wish you all a BIG GOOD LUCK...I know how you are feeling...was feeling that way myself, but heard I got funding (another source) around 3 weeks ago...and even though now only the final formalities remain...I am still on edge...I hope we all start our PhD's come Oct and finish successfully!
Hi. I plan on starting my PhD in Sept-Oct, which involves me moving across Europe to study. My boyfriend will not be coming over (at least for the beginning) so we will have to make do with visiting each other as often as possible. We have been together for 5 years, and he seems to be fully supportive. However going through this forum, I have seen so many couples breaking up. Does anyone have any good tips regarding keeping us together across the continent? Are there any things we need to discuss before hand? We have considered visiting each other once a month, and using internet chatting/Skype for the remainder!
Thanks
Hi
It might help others as well to know this. Today I sent my Supervisor an email requesting whether I could consider the post formally offered. I needed this because I have been offerred a job, for which I need to give a reply by next week. Within 10mins I received a reply confirming that the post is mine.
WEEEEEE starting my PhD (hopefully I would look back on this post and say noooo...but at the moment I am happy :D)
Hey
Thanks for the feedback...I am leaning towards the 'UK' one (it is actually in Dublin so not UK...oooops)...It would still be an experience of living abroad for me since I am from southern Europe...I think the Dublin one is more suited towards my qualifications and my liking, since I have a choice :D...I am still weighing the options...would love to live in Germany...in order to better my German (I studied it for 6 years and loved it)...and English, although my second language, is nearly a mother tongue to me...However in a PhD I think loving the project is more important...I am now hopefully planning a visit to the University in Dublin, and see how things go from there, since till now I only had a telephone interview and email communication...
Hi...I do not know why this is happenning...however you do have a missing } after the caption...try that...
i.e. \caption{Vertical Height Scan Comparison-1000 MHz}
This is the syntax I normally use :D

\includegraphics[scale=0.8]{app5/Images/MethodFlow.eps}
\caption {Flow diagram indicating sample processing}

\end{figure}
PS: Does .jpg work well with Latex? I always converted everything to .eps, because I thought .jpg does not work...
Good luck
