PhD survey
A

Hello. As part of my PhD research I have set up a short survey on the 'Use and Disposal of Medication'. It should take around 5 minutes, and your help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance.

Handling BQL data in Statistics
A

Hello. I will be starting to do statistical analysis for my thesis, and would like to ask what is the best way to handle Below Quantification Limit Values in statistics. Do you ignore them or do you give a very low value? Also How do you handle Below Detection Limit Values? How do you differentiate between them?

Any help is much appreciated

Thank you

Responding to Reviewer Comments
A

HI. I have gotten comments from reviewers from my submission to a journal, and they have requested a document with track changes and a 'clean' document. I am also asked to give line numbers to my explanation of the changes. What line numbers do you give? Those referring to the clean document or to that with track changes? Or does it not matter, as long as you specify?

Thank you very very much in advance

Article Revisions
A

I have received the first article I have submitted back with reviewer comments for major revisions. I am working on the revisions but have a query. The reviewer has written e.g. Line 230 ff, and gave me the comment. I am assuming that this refers to the upcoming section (this is generally the first line of a section). What does the ff stand for? I know it is not important and I am trying to procrastinate (rubbish timing for sending the reviews back...have submitted 6 months ago and received paper on my first day back home for Christmas holidays with a 1 month deadline for corrections oh well), but I am now curious. Thanks

PDF files - Alternatives to Adobe?
A

Hi. I actually starting using foxit reader about 2 months ago to read through and comment on a document available in pdf only. I found it really good and easy to use (my mum managed to use it as well...she is not computer illiterate but not the most tech savvy person out there by no means). I have in fact changed from adobe acrobat to foxit as a default option. The commenting options are really good. it is free to download so just give it a try;

Thanks Sneaks. Did you go with the free survey monkey option? or did you pay? I am mostly worries about the 100 reply limit to the free plan.

Thanks

Good afternoon,

I would like to ask whether you can suggest any survey software you can use to make questionnaires and give out online. e.g. survey monkey. Which have you used? Which are best? any advice?

Thank you

First Conference
A

Look around...there will be other Phd students on their own, and have a chat (over coffee/tea is always useful). Or go to a poster session, look for people who are researching an area similar to yours (not necessarily directly similar but in the same area) and ask them about what they are doing. I find poster sessions and coffee breaks the easiest to get to know people :) Good luck it will be good!

I need your support
A

Hi. I have posted a couple of times here but I now really need your support as I know you can give. Basically I am at the end of the line of my PhD. I am 1 year in and this is what has happened. I am doing a PhD between 2 Universities joining 2 areas:

Uni 1: Was there to use a piece of equipment. Has been broken down since March. My supervisors have told me to just wait it out. I have finally found access last week (myself - no help from my supervisors) to another instrument (4hour plane ride away) meaning I need to be going back and forth after emails to loads of Universities trying to set something up. But it is really stressful.

Uni 2: Was there to do another aspect of the research (I am joining 2 areas) and the supervisor there is now leaving. He has basically said since he is leaving (probably not going to an academic job and going from Europe to Canada)he cannot promise what will happen once he leaves, but he has contacts to 'another instrument' in another Uni (another country). The reply this morning is that the other Uni has this instrument but it is fully in use and they replied to him saying if it is at all possible it is in a couple of months. he basically forwarded the email to me and said I hope this helps (and forwarded 4 papers he said, of which 3 are abstracts and 2 in languages I cannot speak).

Please help me see some light :)

New PhD Student-The Literature Review (Microbiology/Science Field)
A

I would also suggest taking notes on the papers you are writing. I found it very useful when I had to write my literature review that I had the points I had written in the beginning (mainly copy and past from the articles for sentences/paras which were interesting) were very useful, particularly to get me started in writing. Most were useful in the introduction part, but a start nonetheless. And start referencing. Use endnote or whatever your uni suggests/gives you access to. Good luck

Suggestions to cheer up my sister who is writing up
