Hi again Ev...when I'm presenting, after the chair introducesme, I'll just give a big smile and say something like 'Hi everyone, my names algaequeen and as such and such said I'm going to be talking about....' ...so pretty just what you were thinking of then! But don't forget the big smile, it will give them a good first impression and make them want to like you, it will help make you feel more confident and you'll look enthusiastic about your work so they'll want to be interested in it too. All subconscious of course! :p
whoo back again, although I don;t think I'll be in for the long haul, I was shattered yesterday! :) Anyone else up late working?
There prob will be powerpoint, but email to check anyway, and if you don't hear from them before you are due to go there then print your slide on acetate anyway just in case. Also I'd advise to print out handouts of your slides, you know 4 or 6 to a page, that you can hand out in case everything else fails! Plus if anyone is really interested in your talk they can take one away to remember it better. Better be overprepared than under I say!! Good luck! Oh and Bachs Rescue Remedy is great for the nerves!
Whoo its 2.30 am here so I'm off to bed. Almost finished with this results section, just have to tweak a few things tomorrow, then print and read on monday and do final changes. I've done 20 tomatoes today, almost forget how to close my eyes at this stage...
Just thought I'd sign on here tonight! I'm not usually a big night owl, unless I'm dancing of course :p however having just had the most ridiculous tiff with my boyf who has gone off in a huff, I'm too mad to go to bed so thought I'd continue on with the writing! Which leads me to PGF, naturally! Anyone else stuck in PhD land this fine evening?!
Hey Ev, don't stress too much about your slides. You have enough time to do it, you can get it done in a day and then have a day to go over everything and then you've got a day spare! Just make sure you know exactly what you want to say before you start writing them. Also, I think it should be fine presenting something different from what the original paper was, academia and projects are organic thing, they change over time depending on how the research goes, and it's much better showing you can change according to new info and new findings, rather than being dead set on one thing in particular. Good luck!
No I wouldn't say that! I would be totally the same as you in that I'd be nervous about applying if I thought it was a slim chance, but you can't ever let them know that before the application process! They have to think you are perfect for the job, so you have to seem confident and act as if you are the absolute most perfect person for it. Surely ask about some extra experience in the meantime, but do it to enhance your already glowing CV, to show how dedicated and enthusiastic you are about teaching etc. You've got to sell yourself the whole way, as cringeworthy as it feels!! ;-)

Um, well, I'll be there 23rd/24th if that's ok for people, although I'm at that debate thing from 7 - 8.30pm on 23rd. Otherwise I'll be back over in November sometime!
Brilliant news Sue! I have info from our careers department on academic interviews and presentations, I can send it all on to you if you like. I'd agree with what Eska says, especially the bit about how your research fits into the uni and the department! And be confident, they obviously like you and are interested in your CV, so just show them how wonderful you really are! You get the chance now to stick in all the fun bits that you have to leave out of the CV and show off your personality properly, and how great you'll be to work with! (up)
Morning all! Well I managed to get 12 tomatoes done yesterday, although a lot of it was fixing stuff I've done wrongly, sometimes I hate myself for stupid mistakes...
Today my goal is to get this results chapter finished. I will do it!!! Thanks for all the sympathies about the weather here :) Thankfully I'm working at home alone, I'd given up on wearing clothes altogether!! :$
Today though a storm is rolling in, it's cool and there's a lovely wind, and I'm even wearing a cardigan with my shorts! amazing! I have some coffee chilling in the fridge too Teek, good call!
Good luck everyone!
ok! I was in the local supermarket yesterday which sells everything (except cards for some reason...) and picked myself up a little laptop tray thingy! The shipping was working out too expensive online anyway, so got myself a Targus laptop chillmap (never heard of the brand..) and it's great! I had to going for a good few hours last night and my laptop stayed nice and cool!
Stressed, your laptop sounds like it's about to burst into flames any minute! That's crazy that HP wouldn't change it when you first got it, it's definitely not meant to be that hot at the start! My wee thing has been going about 5-6 years now, although only during my final undergrad year has it had the same amount of work it's getting now as I used my office desktop until I moved here!
I will be in the final stages of writing up then, but I should be about for the RI talk on 23rd September if anyone is free then, Teek mentioned she may be coming along. :-)
I'd actually be happy with a bit of rain at the moment...I'm in the south of France with my boyf while I'm writing up, still as white as when I arrived a month and a half ago as I've not had any time to actually enjoy the sun and heat, just suffering inside when it's too hot. And it's been insane this past week. It's forecast to be 24 tomorrow and I'm so relieved!! I'd love a bit of snow actually....
lol I'd maybe use hyperlink, it's totally clear exactly what you mean then, and it may sound a big OTT but then when you have to reference every single thought you've had or point you've made in papers then I tend to stick on the side of caution for things like this...when I remember of course!
