Ahhh my supervisor does that too!! Not my main one thank god, but the 2nd sup. He's so bad that my main sup has told me to come to him with corrections from the 2nd sup before I start on them to see what to include and what to ignore! :-) Drives me absolutely crazy!! Plus, he tends to include a separate word document with paragraphs explaining that something is crap, and lots of little digs and snide remarks, with NO info on how to make it better! Instead of using Track Changes might I add. What a joy!

Job vs Living with husband?

Quote From sushidave:

We also feel that if nothing local (i.e. within 2 hrs of London) comes up, a 2 year postdoc is the ideal time to up sticks and have a real adventure in another country before kids/house comes along - if the location was right, R would be prepared to find a new job elsewhere for a while. So, first things first, finish the thesis, keep my eye on the job boards and have faith that I'll find something that complements my career aims and my relationship! Moon on a stick, moi?

Exactly what me and my other half have decided! Well, kind of! He's in a postdoc in a diff country form me, so we've been doing long distance for a few years now, he's got his postdoc til 2012, so until then I'm trying to finish up and find something that will suit us both location wise so he can come and live where I'm working. If I don't find anything that suits us both, I go wherever I can and then we try and find somewhere in a few years to settle. Really hope it doesn't take that long though!

Can I join your gang!!

Welcome to the forum Phdskallie! I'm sure it's only people who don't understand what the PhD is fully about or they wouldn't be giving you stick about it, but never mind! It will most certainly be frustrating and hard work however! ;-)

All the best of luck!

I'll have a goat! I love a bit of goats cheese!

I'm absolutely shattered, I've had my daily cry though so I'm feeling a little less stressed and hopefully will get this results section finished tonight. Uuuuuuggghhhhhh writing is sooo crap....

I hope your husband feels a bit more upbeat soon Sneaks, it's not nice worrying about some you care for. Maybe he should try looking at things in a different way, as in he may hate his job but at least he's got something, and once you get a job then he will have a bit more freedom to find something else, but until then he should just try looking at the positives. It's not a great solution I know, but there's not much else he can do I think.

Walminski's Writing Up Thread

Sometimes it helps if you just start writing as if you were explaining things to your mum or a friends or something like that. That way you are writing something at least, without trying to make it sound too professional/scientific, and you can figure out what the most important points are to get the message across. It works for me, and often I find that I just end up writing properly anyway, and all the stuff Ive read starts coming back to me. Just write whatever you're thinking about at the time, and hoe it relates to your results, even if it's all over the place and you are jumping from one thing to the next. You can always go back and chop and change things as you edit to improve the language.

remember your one goal thing sneaks!! Take it a page at a time, or a paragraph at a time even, then you'll get there. It might take a bit longer getting into work that you hoped but at least you'll be doing something. And give yourself a little treat for each one you finish, like get up and have a wee dance around when you get each bit done. That way to get to keep the blood flowing to your brain too!

My goal for today was to finish my results section this morning and get stuck into the discussion this afternoon, but I'm still stuck on the results cos of stupid R and me being stupid! and now my shoulders are aching!!

Seriously?!! Education qualifications since age 11?!!
A

'a suitably qualified person' lol :-) I'm surprised they didn't give a list of suitable people just so you didn't make a mistake! Or maybe it was a trick question to see if you can select the same type of person they would, then they might hire you!

I'm thinking of adding a section to these kinds of forms in the future, called 'Alternative Career Choices' so they can really get an idea of what I'm like. I'll include the time I wanted to be a teacher, work in a post office, teacher again, astronaut, cosmonaut, dancer, teacher, party organiser, scientist...

Could you take seriously...

why thank you DanB!! A good brussel sprout is just the ticket on a Sunday morning spent doing a rather difficult results section! Just made my day! :D

Jeez that's mad Baltar, why on earth would they need that kind of information?! It's worrying really, aside from the time and effort it takes to get all that crap together when you are applying or preparing for interview, to give out so much information to so many different places when you are applying is a recipe for disaster to me! They have so much personal info, it just takes one fool employee to do a bit of identity theft and you're scuppered!
And DanB, I do believe it was a public sector job, which I was hoping to avoid but there it is! I have a feeling it's just been tossed out though!

Is the the same place that there was about 50 threads banging about for a while back?! If so I'm not at all surprised!

speculative CVs
A

I've been thinking about doing this myself Sneaks, my supervisor said he'd send on my CV to a few people he knows but I'm finding it really hard to tailor a CV for jobs I don't even know I might be considered for! I've got too much to fire it all down on 2 pages so I'm not sure how to go about putting in the most important stuff cos I don't know what will be important...I guess I'm just worried that a broad ranging CV will look crap compared to one that's been specifically targeted for a job...hmmmm. Good luck!

Seriously?!! Education qualifications since age 11?!!
A

lol Sneaks, I think it might! But you were still the best at what was asked of you there, even if it was going the slowest, so it's still ok! :-)

I'm just really fed up with stupid sections like this on applications, i wasn't expecting it, and ended up taking so long to remember all the details for various sections that I was late getting the application in :( So, although I would be great at the job and have a good application, cos it's late it may just tossed out! Kicking myself severely here! Note to self, don't forget/leave it to the last minute to fill out forms...

Job applications
A

Congrats Barnaby! I've applied for 2 jobs, one outright rejection, one I'm waiting to hear. I've also got applications to send in for another 2 jobs but I don't enough experience for either of them, but having been looking for jobs for the past few months, and finding very very little, I'm applying for anything that interests me, even if not fully qualified! Cos ya never know! * grasps desperately at straws...*

Having just completed yet another job application, I'm sick to the back teeth of these stupid requirements! You'd think having a degree, studying for PhD, even having A levels would be enough to prove I'm not thick, but since age 11?!! What, do they want the results for my Key Stage 3 exams as well as my GCSEs?!! I can't hardly remember what subjects I did exactly for my GCSEs, I only know the grades off by heart, but not what grade goes with what topic! :-) It's just ridiculous I think, maybe I should stick in all my Speech and Drama and swimming certificates as well eh?!

Grrrrr!!!

viva date - freak out!!!
A

Ah that all sounds like great feedback Chris!! You will be great in your viva I'm sure, you just have to trust in yourself that you know the stuff and you know it well, and that you deserve this PhD! You've worked bloody hard for it! Concentrate on some positive thinking and building your confidence and you'll knock their socks off! (up)
