ok, I may be showing myself up with my taste in music here, but here goes!
For days when I've had a meeting with my supervisor which has left me seething and mad...I give you Woman, by Wolfmother.
For days when I'm sitting looking down a microscope bored out of my mind, I give you Starlings, by Elbow (actually pretty much any song from the Seldom Seen Kid album)
For days when I'm wondering if it's all worth it and what the hell am I doing here, etc, I give you The Cave, by Mumford and Sons and My Boy Builds Coffins by Florence and the Machine
And for days when I've left the lab in a good mood about work, yet slightly apprehensive that this good mood will only end in a crushing and demoralising next day in the lab, I give you The Remedy, by Jason Mraz.
Intersparsing these with Sigur Ros tracks, Ray Lamontagne (for when I'm really missing the boyf and hating long distance relationships), Damien Rice, and the odd bit of Wagner, Mozart and Vivaldi (Spring from the Four Seasons, just perfection)
:)
oh Bug! what a nightmare!! I'd say take a loan from your sup if necessary, or is there food available at the conference? Surely they will have sandwiches and biscuits etc, just stuff yourself at that at least, and see if the organisers will let you use a phone to call the credit card company to find out what's going on with your visa.
I'm sure everyone will appreciate what a nightmare journey you had getting to the conference, at least when you are talking to people over the next few days they will see that you are bright and you can talk about your work still, it doesn't all rest on a talk. Has your luggage arrived yet at least?!
Do you have anyone at home Emmaki who can access your computer and email your stuff for your meeting? Also, a bit late for now, but something to bear in mind for the future, when you are giving presentations it's handy to have a ton of handouts to give out to your audience, even if you don't need them it's good that they have a copy of your talk and can remember you, and if all else fails, you can use them as your presentation so you aren't solely talking without any slides!
And I second the wine, there's not much else you can do!
lol just because there is no science behind something doesn't mean it's not able to work or that if it does work it's only due to a placebo effect! Science explains things we don't know or understand yet as well as inventing new things! There is a lot of nonsense about homeopathic remedies, putting aside medication and radiotherapy in favour of homeopathic medicines for cancer treatment for example. That kind of stuff is a problem of course, but a simple flowers remedy for anxiety, which many people say works for them, is fine in my book. But good luck with the conference, glad you got sorted ok!
hey Keep_Calm, I know some people who have tried beta blockers for anxiety before and it seems pretty harmless occasionally so I'd say try it if you want to. However, for the Rescue Remedy, it's not that it's a homeopathic medicine, it's really just flower extracts, and as such is just a mild alcohol mix, which does work. I think dismissing all homeopathic remedies out of hand is a bit rash, although I do appreciate that a lot of it is just nonsense. But if it works, you may as well try it!
Hey Chris, I know you said you had made your last post about all this, but I just wanted to say I'm so sorry this has happened, especially at such a delicate time for you. I didn't see the original post so only seeing it now, but try to stay positive for the next few days at least, you WILL finish and you WILL do well, and after, when you have had time to regroup and decide what you want to do and where you want to go from here. Every single person in this forum is behind you Chrisrolinski, and we are all sending good vibes! It's a really crappy time fo this, and a really crappy thing that your ex couldn't wait until you've finished, seems to say at lot more about him that it does about how you are, so don't feel so negative about yourself. It's time to try and be pragmatic about things, and keep on keeping on, and when you have time to deal with it, once you've handed in, then you can.
I honestly wish you all the luck in the world, I'll give you all my good luck for the next while too, and if you feel like a random chat just PM away. And of course, copious amounts and tea and chocolate in the meantime, whatever it takes!
Hi everyone
Sorry for yet another boring stats question, but I'm trying to help someone in my office and I'm stumped. I've done this before but can't remember how. We are trying to see if there is a sig difference between a certain value over 12 months. I've tried ANOVAs and t-tests but nothing is coming out right, I can't figure out if it's just how I've set the data up or what. There is no grouping variable or anything, just a single value for each month. I want to avoid doing loads of individual t-tests though...
Thanks in advance!
Ok the universe is out of kilt here, something has happened and I'm sure exactly what it is!
I met with my evil sup today, to discuss the last stats results I've done for my chapter/paper. He was nice to me the whole way through the meeting; he usually gives digs etc, but this time not a peep! He was chatty, interested in my work (usually he acts like he's SO bored and it's all crap...) and he said I have good data. And then he said something that I've never ever heard him say. He told me that I was a hard worker, and I've obviously done a lot of work. I was a little speechless at that bit I have to admit. It seems I have won him over, if only for a little while at least! :-)
Also lab stuff I've ordered should be here byt he end of the week, so next week I can get stuck into my lab work like a demon, and hopefully get the last ball rolling! It's been such a great day so far, I'm waiting for something terrible to happen! 8-)
I hope everyone else is going ok, and if not, it will pass and you'll get a good time again!! Just keep on keeping on!
Good golly Wally, is there anything you don't know?! I am in awe here!
As for the iron deficiency, being Irish we have our own method - a good old pint of Guinness. It actually used to be prescribed medically for iron deficient people, and many doctors still recommend it today to people with deficiencies. It's absolutely chock full of iron!
um...Hollyoaks? only cos it seems to never, ever be cold there, even though it's set in Chester land. Judging by the short skirts and Darrens ever-present and ever-awful string vest anyway...maybe they don't feel the cold, and for that it should definitely be included!
Also, Tom Selleck as rich bunisess man in Pretty Woman...yes please! Something's just not right about Richard Gere or (especially?) Robert Redford... *shudder*
lol i think it was the smile that didn't hurt! :D regardless of the competition we have now etc, how did DanB and all the rest get free stuff initially?! Altho I'd not say no to a mug I don't have much desire to start writing out new stuff for the forum, mayhaps I can copy paste/edit a reply I gave before???! Or is that cheating? ;-)
lol Moonblue my mum does this with everything! Once things get put in a 'safe place' that's it, it could take months for them to be found again! I found out last week that she had just come across a gift she bought for me, it was in its safe place for so long she can't remember if it was bought for birthday, Christmas or whatever! Still haven't got it... :-)
I can always sniff out the chocolate though!!
Aww, it's such a lovely movie, I bought it on DVD so I've watched it several times, couldn't resist seeing it on TV tonight! It's really sweet, a quiet kind of movie, and makes me cry every time! I'd definitely recommend it! Especially as a treat for finishing your chapter today, you go girl!! Makes me feel guilty enough to do some more work!
um....well after watching glee, i wrote a few lines, then went for a walk in the park, now going to have dinner while watching Miss Potter! Not a whole lot of writing done!! Well done Batfink on getting your work done though!
