Makeup Queries (for Ladies)

Hi Starlight, I don't tend to follow make up trends, as I think once you've got something to suit you then stick with it! Obviously reassess what suits you every so often though! :-) For the black dress, I tend to go with simple eyes and red lips, it's always one or the other, that particular gem will never change :-) for the gold dress, I don;t usually wear gold as I'm quite pale (almost blue actually...) but if I do wear those tones then it's always a brown/bronze shade of make up as I have blue eyes it helps stop me looking washed out :) To keep a fashion twist to it though i usually update accessories, so black dress with black shoes/bag of the season, or coloured shoes like red patent shoes and bag (I got some lovely ones in Faith), patterns whatever is in fashion/takes your fancy :)

It's my birthday today :-)

Work gone...

god this sounds like a nightmare, i really feel for you here... you can try to reset your computer to a previous date, such as the day before you might have deleted your 'new' file, if you saved it onto the computer while you were working you might get an unfinished version of it then that cuts out the work you have to do now. It's a slim chance but worth a try, just make sure you back up all the work you've done since then in case that is deleted when you reset your computer.

Good luck (up)

i meet my nemesis again....

Ahhh, excel 2007.....according to my mytomatoes break i have 50 seconds so I'll make this short...I'm doing graphs on excel and as the new 2007 is totally retarded I can't figure out a way to use a chart template style that I have already saved. I have several charts which all need to be changed to a more 'scientific' style than the crayon-drawing type style of the current excel default chart, I have made a chart template and saved it but I can't access it to use it for the next chart....anyone know how to do this?!

Moving somewhere new and making friends
A

Hi DanB!
I hate this kind of thing, I'm crap with making proper friends. I get on well with people generally, I'm just really shy about trying to improve or develop the friendship, plus there are few peopel I really click with! When I started my PhD it was in the same uni as my undergrad but all my mates either moved back home, went travelling or went to different places for work, and I was literally the only one left and had to make new friends from scratch. It's difficult when people in work aren't really available outside of that, I get on great with the folks in my office but they all have partners, children or commute to work....so I don't really have much advice actually!
What I did was joing about a hundred different groups and make friends there. Also usually you'll meet one peson who will be best mates with just anyone, usually this person is a little irritating after a while but as they usually don't mind hanging around with you all the time you can meet others through them (a bit cheeky I know, but desperate times and all that.. :-)). I also have made one truly great friendship through a club I joined and having a spare room in my flat that luck would have it they moved into and we became best mates after that. So I think a combination of flat-sharing - maybe when ur current postdoc guy moves out you'll get someone who is more outgoing and who you click with more..., perseverance with joining clubs etc and trying to meet people that way, and maybe even doing some volunteer work if you have the time? I've found that the people I volunteer with are usually super friendly and there's usually always something going on that you can pop along to and have some craic :-)

The horrible realisation...

hi Keenbean
I think this is a bit mad what your supervisor is expecting of you, and I would definitely learn to say no asap..most of the postdocs I've spoken to have said that it's more stressful than a PhD and much more work, so just imagine how much your sup would expect you to do if you did get a postdoc with her at the end...I've had to tell my supervisors no in the past, and it's clear some of them didn't like it one little bit, but I've gained respect for being able to stand up for myself.  Obviously however, if you do want to do it all and are ok with putting in all the time required then fair enough, but personally I'd rather do 5 things well than 10 things half as good...but maybe that's just me! :-)

Need advice from someone who's been through it! Waiting is KILLING ME!

QUB takes ages to do anything, especially the postgrad office! altho the cancer institute is meant to be great, so id say hang on in there, keep looking around for other projects just in case, but you'll find out soon enough I'm sure. Altho it is miserable waiting! good luck!

*really* tough day and a difficult decision
A

I'm so pleased for you angelofthenorth! It's a very scary decision to make, I came very close several times and am stuck having to make another (different topic) decision at the moment! All the very very best of luck in converting to an MPhil, and I hope things keep going good as they are now :-)

If you haven't backed up your files recently, do so NOW

Money saving tips anyone?

also when buying groceries, go late at night to get the reduced stuff in sainsburys etc, and M&S has some really good deals on food sometimes, for those occasions when you want to treat yourself! :-)

Conference Presentations

sounds good wally, I usually get about 12-15 slides depending on if ive got graphs or photos or whatever to put up :) good luck for the talk and let us know how it goes :)

Conference Presentations
A

hi wally
In my uni the general mantra is one minute a slide, so 10 minutes is 10 slides. However this all depends on whether or not you have any 'quick' slides, like the title slide and a thank you slide at the end, that kind of thing, where you know you'll just be putting it up for a second or two and not dwelling on it.
Also, we've been told many many times, about the rule of 7's...no more than 7 lines on a slide and 7 words on a line. I absolutely HATE when people put up loads of stuff on a slide, it makes me not even want to hear what they will be saying. We've got one course director who sees it as a sign of laziness, like the presenter just hasnt tried hard enough to make it more concise... :-)
as for references, we've been told not to bother, reference the name and year as in text, if you want to, if anyone wants the reference they can ask you for it at the end or at tea break.
try printing out a handout of your slides, with an extra slide at the end with the references, so you can give them the handout and to take away, and they'll remember more about you and your talk too!

IMMIGRATION SUCCESS

try egg salad sneaks, its great. salad has practically no calories so you can eat tons of it, and a really good low fat vinigarette is 2 parts (good) olive oil, 1 part balsamic vinigar, salt, pepper and a splash of normal sarsons malt vinegar, soo tasty. throw in some tomatoes (separately season them with salt and pepper first, makes all the difference) and warm hard boiled eggs and its yummy, plenty of protein and good fats but none of the bad stuff :)

Buy it sneaks, buy it! but only as a reward! good luck for your rewrites, i hate having to do all that stuff...today i'm finally deciding on a mehtod for my PCR work, hopefully i can pin down the woman im working with and discuss it with her and them get started on ordering whatever i need and getting set up for it. Then tonight it's off to the school formal dance thingy, so I have to get everything done by 4ish time! :-)
