piece of advice

2 and 3 are not scientific justifications. They are pragmatic justifications, which are still valid - but related to the practicality of doing your research not the outcomes.

1 - depends on your research question. Are you relating the answers to demographic variables? If so, what ones? And are you hoping to claim that your result is universally applicable? I mean, if your question relates to access to healthcare, then claiming that interviewing in London will give answers with universal validity does not hold (cos it will be very different in the highlands of Scotland).

To ask a Q back, what is the basis on which you want to be SCIENTIFICALLY valid in an interview-based study?

contingency...'if I pass'? or 'when I pass'
A

I had to think about this for a while, and i realised I dont think about passing/not passing at all, I just think about finishing - which i will do, but it could be with a degree or not.

when all this is done ... are you going to go to graduation or not?
A

aw, that's a shame for all the people that missed out on UG graduation.

Can't make up my mind whether I want to go to the PhD one - mostly cos I am so fed up of my department. Would quite like to wear the funny hat though!

does anyone have a 20,000 word long chapter in their thesis?
A

putting things in foonotes/endnotes saved my life in my MA, but they count towards the limit for my thesis

when all this is done ... are you going to go to graduation or not?
A

Just idley wondering about that day possibly sometime in the future when all this nonsense will be over ...

are you going to do the full works with the funny hat and the relatives in tow an' all and go to your graduation ceremony

or, are you just going to take the certificate and run?

How to make a poster?
A

if it helps, these are some of the weblinks i looked at prior to making my first poster

http://www.swarthmore.edu/NatSci/cpurrin1/posteradvice.htm
http://keyskills.canterbury.ac.uk/communication/posters/index.htm
http://clinic.cant.ac.uk/key-skills/study/posters/index.asp
http://www.corporate.coventry.ac.uk/cms/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=3168&a=18370

sure there are lots more - there are various bits about layout, font size, how much you should try and include, how to put it together to make it coherent etc which i found useful. Some of them took a bit of wading through (but then, i like procrastinating and it put off having to start the bloomin thing).

rant: why people ruin library books with their notes and highlights etc.
A

no offence taken 404. It's interesting isnt it? I dont think it is parental influence in my case as we didnt really have books in my house. I suppose I have an (ahem) intimate relationship with my books, and scribbling on them seems to bring us closer - bit like decorating my room, or altering clothes, it makes them more mine. And i could never sell them or pass them on to someone else, that would be like abandoning a friend.

but of course, you can't get intimate with library books in the same way, because they are already spoken for.

i have to confess i scribble all over my own books. I think it is nice, it makes them more personal. When i go back, it reminds me of when i was there before.

does mean i am amassing a shockingly large collection of books - must be one of amazon's best customers.

Any plans for Easter?
A

I am going to be taking some time off because I will have finished my first draft by Easter. I will, I will, I will ....... aaaaaaaaaaargh.

(and two people in the last two days have tried to tell me that Easter is THIS WEEK! why do people have to frighten me like that. I have this week and next week and I WILL be finished)

Becoming nocturnal. Standard routine: start work at 4pm, work till 2am, sleep till 10am.
except with the clocks changing I am now getting up at 11. Oooooooh what would my mum say

rant: why people ruin library books with their notes and highlights etc.
A

that is shocking. why do people do that to stuff that isnt theirs? Do they just *forget* it's a library book?

I'd be embarassed to think of someone else reading my inane margin scribbles.

Referencing websites: access date and copyright date
A

Oh, wow, thankyou! didnt know about the right click thing, that will be sooo useful.

i see what you mean about making it look as though research was done at the last minute. I suppose putting (date LAST accessed xxxxx) might make it clear that we are being diligent in checking refs (having done research earlier (??).

i like you am beginning to hate referencing, esp websites.

does anyone have a 20,000 word long chapter in their thesis?
A

my institution has a max of 100,000 excluding refs.

i am going to be doing a lot of editing

Referencing websites: access date and copyright date
A

sorry to the style guides, but having 'date of FIRST access' just seems silly, given that websites change. Date of last access makes more sense IMHO. If you have checked the site and got updated copyright info I'd go with the date you did that as 'date of access'. At least, that is what i am doing, i am checking sites as i am writing and putting that as date accessed.

With my MA dissertation, I had a half day near to submission when i went through and double checked web refs, and then just put a statement 'all websites last access on ...'. I might end up doing that for the PhD.

BTW, i have a lot of sites where there is no copyright date or other obvious date, are you finding this 404 and what do you do? It is meaning i have a lot of 'undated' stuff, which i am worried about.
