Calling all gymmers!

Quote From phdbug:

Yeah I had the induction this afternoon but they showed me all the machines and I promptly forgot everything except the treadmill, cycle and stepper :( Guess I wil ask them toorrow, only its embarrassing 'cos all the others know what they are doing:$

I HAVE to join in on this one.. i joined the gym.. it was MASSIVE, i thought nobody would look at me or care. Even had a girls area! Great! Except for when anyone is next to you on a similar machine and you can't help but look to see what weight they are using or what level they are on, the pressure to keep up usually leads to pulled muscles! Don't even get me started on arm weights, ALWAYS start small, i just copied the fit looking girl next to me doing some weight work and dropped the first weight straight away :(

I spend more time trying to follow the step by step pictures next to the machines than actually using them, and the paranoia of people watching is just too much!

and finally, i do not need to see music videos of all the gorg women in their scantily clad clothes.. just to remind you.. WORK HARDER... !!!

I struggle to get to a 10, not sure I ever will! ahh well, at least I'm not still in the 20s lol.

I HATE gyms, hate those mega fit people charging around not breaking sweat while I'm half dead hanging on for dear life lol lol lol That's why I prefer to work out away from the gym, I'd love access to all that equipment but the 'going there' puts me off, it seems daft to get in a car and drive and then run lol (I live in the middle of nowhere, no footpaths, no mains water even... the nearest gym is 6 miles away - not being a lazy gymbunny ;-) ) - and the expense - I looked into it and nearly died of shock! I love exercise workout dvds - my fave atm is (hangs head in shame) the Steps workout one - remember the cheezy group from the 90s? I love it, mainly because of the eye candy - its Claire (not eye candy obviously) and then all these majorly fit guys AND, when it gets to the combat workout stage, they take their tops off - its certainly enough to motivate a girl :-x;-)

Hi
these sort of things are great for arms, much harder then normal weights but cheap enough to have at home and use when ever you have the time, i have some and they really help you get to the burn quicker!!
you can get a similar sort of thing with handles on which is a bit easier to use.

i am so useless. Today I did the arm machines, 15 cycles three times with just FIVE kilo weights did it for me. Arms are thrrobbing and pulsing as I type this immediately after!

My gym is in my uni so 2 mins walk from my department, so no reason not to go..

I did 10 mins treadmill at 6.5 kmph, so about 1.1 km, then 10 mins on the cycle at the required rpm, required heart rate, then 45 cycles with the 5 kilo weights and then 10 mins on the cross trainer.

Total hardly 35 mins but am tired!!

arrgh I am so useless, the others were just PRO!

I walked a mile and half to the supermarket and back and have been painting my living room - it's fabulous PhD procrastination. Does that count? No throbbing arms though.

My doc says my weight is ok, but that I could lose the few extra kilos. HHmmmm, she reckons that because my diet is ok, I'd need to up my exercise :-( Currently, I can't be bothered. I walk a lot, about 15 miles per week, and do 25 mins of resistence and stretching exercises at home a few times a week. I feel all right, although a photo of me taken from behind in a pencil skirt last week did surprise me: J-Lo eat your heart out - I really ought to buy cardigans that fit properly across the back too. Damn you Zara with you super-skinny Spanish sizes.

Can anyone tell me why my paintwork looks all uneven and blotchy? Am using a roller

S

Eska, it may be that your roller is overloaded because it hasn't been worked sufficiently in the grid part of the tray. It's been a while since I painted, so that's just a guess.

Bug, it's never worth comparing yourself to other people in the gym because they'll always be someone better. What it is worth doing, though, is making sure you get the technique spot on and then spend the time quietly laughing at people who insist on doing stupid things with heavy weights. I had a (short, fat) friend who wanted to show off about something so loaded the leg press up to 300-350 pounds. He did 3 reps, stopped, and then couldn't walk home.
