I use a single quotation for any quotes, and double quotation for quotes within a quote...e.g. if a participant says 'so my mum said "why are you applying there?" and I thought...' (completely made up quote). I hope that makes sense!

Perfect, thank you! I'm going to copy that! :)

Glad it helped :)

Quote From Zutterfly:
So, what are everyone's plans/goals for this week?

My plan is struggling! I have one month to complete:
- Revisions on a paper which came back from a journal (rejected btw), which includes additional analyses and submitting again.
- Preparing a conference presentation
- Writing the first draft of a new article

But one precious week of this month (which was last week) has flown away because I spent two days on proofreading an accepted manuscript. Then I submitted another paper, which took the rest of the week because I had problems with journal requirements of manuscript formatting.

*sigh* I am a bit stressed. Funding is ending in december, so I have to get it done

Hi Everyone

I'm in need of lots of participants for my dissertation. It a should take about 35 minutes of your time, it involves a questionnaire and computerised task. Both have to be completed on a laptop/computer. I'd be more than happy to do your studies too!

Sounds good. Another short chapter here too! Thinking of writing the thesis abstract too in the next two weeks so there is plenty to do!

That's exciting, being at the stage of writing an abstract! It feels odd writing short chapters, after writing a 20k one. They feel very flimsy!

Yes, it feels very odd, and I keep feeling like I should be adding more ...

Hi guys, long time lurker here, finally decided to join in the very last days before submission! Getting my thesis bound in 9 days, eek! Just doing a final proof read now and stressing about the parts where I have cited one of my externals... I've been using these concepts that he's slightly critical of and my approach has been to use them "in a way that is informed by" the external. So I keep going back and forth on how to word this appropriately and time is running out...

In terms of the abstract, someone told me to just sit down and write one in 30ish minutes without flicking through your thesis or checking anything. I thought that was really helpful as it makes it difficult to overthink and you end up writing down what the cores aspects of the thesis are. Of course it needed polishing but the basic content and structure were there.

Wow that's great news, congratulations! :)

Thanks for the advice on the abstract, I've just done that this morning, and I think it has worked, though it needs major editing, as I am way over the word count!

Best of luck!

Late to the party, but I returned from a conference abroad the other day. I had a rest and now I am trying to sort another job application by the end of today, and I have a few more to apply for over the coming week.

As for the PhD, I will be returning to the editing on Monday. I am feeling a bit gloomy about it all recently as I am struggling to balance the time and effort of job applications with the editing of the thesis. When I am working on one, I am fretting over the other!

H

Good to hear from you Zutterfly! I think job applications are one of the most tedious and boring things to do. They suck the life out of me and tend to increase my dispair, and I am not looking forward to that stage.

I've just done a calculation of word count and I am 20,000 words above the word count!!! How did this happen? Will discuss it with my supervisor but goodness, I wasn't expecting this!

How are you all doing with word count?

C

Are all your chapters written, Hugh? I've got about 50,000 words now but with 2 or 3 chapters still to write. I'm not expecting to go up to the maximum word count, as I tend to have the opposite issue and write a bit too concisely! I'm thinking that when it's all put together for editing, there will be obvious areas of repetition and stuff that can come out.

I wish I could write concisely! :)

All my chapters are written up as first drafts, but half of them haven't been checked by my supervisor yet, so there's still plenty of changes to make, and loads to do. I also have 3 other chapters that need editing. So its no where near a first full draft quite yet. My supervisor is also away for most of Aug/Sep, and I wasn't expecting that, so things are sadly going to move much slower than I anticipated! But I am still pushing for a 2016 submission.

How about you? When do you plan to submit?
