That's what I thought, but then I wondered if that was too much 'common sense' for academia and if it would be classed as self-plagiarism!

I'm sure it wouldn't, because that's why the papers are acknowledged at the beginning of the thesis, and if that was the case, people would avoid publishing before thesis submission?

Yes, that makes sense.

Final Year is the greatest year when so this time is precious for them.PGDM and MBA Courses are offered by the expert of Professionals

A little over 6 months out. One draft chapter submitted, great progress on another (and I write very quickly) so happy with that. Data collection session on Saturday (at a synchrotron facility) which should give me the data I really need to nail down the crystal structure of the protein I work on, which would be a big deal and make me feel so much more confident. And had my final meeting with my committee two weeks ago who weren't at all concerned, rated my progress as good and just helped me solidify the key experiments in my mind. Of which there are three which are very achievable.

All in all I'm feeling good. Leaving work at just after 6pm which is the earliest in months. Going to hit the gym as my hobby (powerlifting) is the thing really keeping me sane and then make some notes for how I want to structure a results chapter that I haven't started yet but have all the data for.

A night away from a damned computer screen!!! I can enjoy eating and thinking about experiments I won't have time to do before submitting!

Pleased to hear you are progressing very well!

I've started on the next chapter. Its going slower than I expected, because I've still got a bit of analysis to do. How are the rest of you doing?

Doing a mix here of analysing, writing my next draft and planning to go out and do more data collection later in the week. I am looking forward to the time when only writing is left out of those things, as I'm not good at concentrating for short bursts and would prefer to be writing all the time!

H

I understand what you mean chickpea, plus data collection is so much dependent on others too, and some things are out of ones control, like recruitment rates or speed for example.

How long do you find you can write for in one go?

Yes - recruitment and data collection has been uneven and uncertain and I can't wait for it to be finished!

I think I probably write for a couple of hours at a time, plus all the time you spend mulling it over and generally thinking of ways to re-phrase things. What about you? I like to have a day of being in the writing 'zone' and being able to think about it properly, rather than jumping from one sort of task to another. The one type of writing that I find really slow and painstaking is when you need a reference every other sentence and have to keep checking and re-reading things.

yes, I can spend a couple of hours too, but like you, I prefer to concentrate on one task. I don't even like jumping between chapters and tasks, I like to finish one chapter/task and then move to the next one. But sometimes it is good to take a break and look at the piece of writing after a week or two, but I don't seem to have the patience to do that!

Write, back to analysis for me! :)

H

Hi everyone, how are you doing? I'm still working on analyses but managed to edit another chapter. Still got a lot do yet but really looking forward to the Easter break!

Are you taking time off for a break?

Sounds like you're doing well! I'm working on analyses too, and slowly getting to the end of my data collection. I'm trying to get another chapter to the point where I can send it to my supervisor, hopefully by the end of this week.

I'm planning on having Good Friday/Easter Monday as a break - not sure about having more than that, but we'll see what I get done between now and then!

Z

Like Chickpea, I will be taking Good Friday through until Easter Monday off as break- how about you Hugh? I am currently proof reading my second findings chapter before I send it to my sup (my deadline for this chapter is Friday!) then I like to take a few days away from writing chapters and busy myself with other PhD related things. So I will be doing this before moving on to the third and final findings chapter *Hurray*

H

Zutterfly and chickpea, sounds like you are both making great progress, well done! :)

I'm taking a week off to relax. I'm quite particular about taking holidays and take them regularly. I do sometimes wish I had more time to do work, but my partner makes sure I take off. It's nice to come back refreshed and I like to keep the work-life balance as far as I can :)

In other news, today I opened an older version of a document and started editing it *aaarggghhh

I've just spent the past 30 minutes reading through the thesis submission guidelines, and its feeling really real now, and scary (!). I've got 9 months to submission and lots to do!

Oh yes, it brings it home when you start to think about how the thing will look and what you need to do to submit it! Our formatting guidelines are pretty awful and despite my best intentions, I can't stand to work with the specifications they want so am going to have to convert it all at the end! Hope yours are not too bad!

I'm in the same boat too, our requirements are double spacing which I can't stand, so will have to do it in the end! Thankfully they don't require a specific font!

A friend of mine said it took him 1 month to get the editing of the final thesis sorted! *shock*
