Well gridlocked see you in the library....or maybe we can pop for a tea break some time!!

Woohhhhoooo to us both.......An good luck with house hunting...I was looking on gumtree an manchester student homes as susspect that the accom office wont have anything left by now!! They pretty much told me i wasrnt gonna get anything but did!!Phew!!

G

Boo for waterbaby's tonsillitis! (poor you)

I have been looking on gumtree too. I'm really still quite excited. Drinking lots didn't seem to calm me down. Really need to sort somewhere to live soon though.

Yay! well done to us both! (I'm proud of us anyway, even if no one else is)

And tea breaks would be cool (especially as tea is the best thing in the world).

Take care of yourself and congratulations again.

PS. It's Andy by the way.

T

I missed this too.. Well done

G

Haha, I must admit the 'babe' surprised me somewhat DanB. Yes, perhaps we should stick to 'Mate'.

Thanks again everyone, I'm still a happy puppy, albeit a hungover one.

Dan, it's in materials research at Manchester Uni. Basically it's to do with developing different methods of measuring residual stress in nuclear components and comparing to modelling techniques. Though, I believe they're still finalising the details of the work.

W

Yay....i almost nearly have my voice back!!

Sorry Andyi too thought you were a girl .....but its OK cause you love tea too!! none of that nasty foriegn coffee stuff for me!!

Hope the hangover improves! good luck house hunting!!

which dept do you come under then sounds a bit cross a few different topics to me?

G

Doh! Everyone thinks I'm a girl. Oh well, I'll just have to deal with it. Maybe it's the way I write?

Waterbaby, it's at the materials science centre on Grosvenor Street. I think it's tied in with the school of materials (an assumption, but one that makes sense to me). Which Dept are you going to be in? Also, have you been invited to an induction or anything? As yet, I haven't, but could do with some kind of intro as it's a completely new university and city to me. I get the feeling that they left everything a bit late in letting me know that I've been accepted. So, it's going to be a bit of a rush getting myself sorted in time for October. Eeek again!

ps. Tea is the greatest! (he says, supping on a cup of Assam).

W

Hmmm now im a bit of an earl grey girl myself!

i quiet agree that they have left it rather late for your offr to start in time!
Im in the Dep medical an Human Sciences in the Stopford building (it to is on Oxford rd an the ugliest one of the lot) from what I can tell the induction thing is dependant on your dept. As I have a welcome event on the 25th an then there is an introduction to research course that is running that I assume is for all PhD students that you have too book on hmmm Im doing it the 9th an 10th Oct as thats the erliest date i could book but there are others.....do you want the name of the lady an tel number to book on??

W

In a way im lucky I did my undergrad degree in Manchester at the Met...... different uni same city....at least means I dont have to worry bout the both but the nerves are just about starting to kick in anyway!!!

In general they seem to be pretty organised about sending stuff out an there is a lot of it!! But may be worth asking your postgrad admin at the uni for more info! They sent me a thing called the critical guide there is a fair bit of info in that bu a lot isnt relevant as im a UK student who is on a studentship so have got my fee's paid too!!!

Any questions just ask....oh an accom wise if poss avoid student village an tramways as private halls (tiny tiny rooms) .....an avoid longsight an mosside as places to live unless you enjoy being shot at....As far as rusholme goes the closer to oxford rd the better.....But beggars cant be choosers at this point I guess!

hmm after all that I think I need a cuppa!

G

Hmmm, not so sure about Earl Grey, how about Ceylon or Darjeeling? I'm sure we can find common ground tea somewhere.

I am getting a bit panicky now. I've been trawling the internet all night trying to find places to live. I've know a lot of people living in Manchester over the years, so I've got some ideas of ok places to live. Withington's ok, Isn't it? I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't want to be in halls. I preferably want to share a house with other postgrads. As it's a new city for me, I'll need new friends, so housemates would help. Though as you said, beggars can't be choosers. Hmph!

The induction thingy for materials is on the 20th I've just found out, and, and lasts for 3 days. Which is a problem since I don't have anywhere to live yet. Though I'm currently in Sheffield, so travelling everyday isn't a big deal......

G

Next problem is that I'm supposed to register at the induction too, which I can't do without my offical acceptance letter. It's probably no surprise that I haven't got this yet either. Hmmm!

I think I'll get on the phone to them tomorrow and get some things sorted out. Otherwise, I'll just get myself more and more stressed. Oh, and yeah the name of the booking lady type person would be cool.

So I think your building is quite close to mine (which is also ugly). It's a pretty cool area to be based.

Again, thanks loads for your avdice. It's been really helpful.

W

Yeah I think we could comprmise on a nice cuppa of darjelling!

Hopefully you got some sleep!

Hmm yeah my official offer letter took 3 weeks from my telephone offer but that was august so were probably all on holiday!

OK lady who i had to book the intro to a research PhD is Sarah Williams you may jus==t wanna check that this is for all PhD students but I cant see that the school of medicine would be running inductions for over 100 new PhD students seems unlikely! Anyway she may be able to tell you as she is the 'training admin' so she may be able to give you a number for a counterpart in your Dept. So her no is 0161 275 1454 (sorry postgrad team i know I should post names an numbers but its a helpfull one...i think!0

good luck house hunting!
