Referring to oneself: use of personal pronoun

4

shani, I think what you say is quite logical. I've read similar opinions from academics. But I would be a little scared to suddenly start using "I". But if I do, do you think it would be a good idea to explain the use of language, in the introduction of the thesis? Are you going to be using the first-person in your thesis?

O

thanks, I'll try that

@ 404...
As I only just started my PhD, I'm yet far from the writing up process... but I will certainly use "I" (unless my supervisor explicitly advises me against it even after I've explained my reasons). I personally think explaining this use of language should not be necessary but I'm not sure about this and will seek advice when I start writing.

i think it does depend on the field, and I agree with Shani - if it is you that is making the argument, rather than 'the data, then you have to acknowledge that. I'm also taking my guide from the literature i am using, which uses 'I' or 'we'. On that basis i dont think the use needs to be justified. though i guess if it is uncommon in your field then justification might be necessary.

Oh, and i have a few 'we's in there too. On the basis that 'the thesis is a journey' and I (as the author) am acting as a guide to the reader, so I've got the odd 'as we saw in chapter 4' type of thing.

At the moment. till the sups say i can't.
