The nocturnal workers' thread

Yes, I'm here for awhile. I'm writing the summary for a chapter so I'm ploughing the text pulling out the key findings. Happy joy!

A

Hi Sylvester! hmmmm, tea and a biscuit to keep you going :)

ok, i think i'm becoming obsessed with food in the process of writing up, and unfortunately not fruit and cereal! :( I think i'm just going to go to bed, want to be bright and cheerful for tomorrows meeting and not dragging my feet!

best of luck for your chapter summary, i'm sure it will all come together soon,

Started going through final batch of detailed thesis feedback (can do the first half now - have a meeting to discuss second half in a couple of weeks). Starting by going through the easy fix suggestions which I don't quibble over, like grammar, or odd extra words, or punctuation. Crossing each one out with a yellow highlighter pen as I deal with it - nice to see progress! It's very tedious though and rather depressing turning page after page to see a pile of mega scribbles. So only doing a chapter's worth tonight. Will resume tomorrow.

Once all that's sorted out I plan to go through the thesis again and draw up a list of the more troublesome things, and start tackling them, while also tackling the higher-level issues. But will get there.

Hi Bilbo,

Thats brilliant, good for you! its so nice to see things get scored off! :) I had a pretty productive day yesterday after 3 bad ones and just have to finish one section in my intro and thats the final draft ready for corrections!!

Then its on to chapters 2/3....!! really good to feel at last like things are moving forward and I can say one chapter is complete!

You seem to have been up for alot of hours, make sure you get some sleep!

Excellent news re your chapter Alpacalover. Well done and good luck with moving on to 2 and 3!

As for me sleeping, it's all over the place at the moment. I sleep for up to 17 hours a day due to the neurological disease, and I sleep at strange times as well. I only woke up at about 6pm yesterday, so I hadn't been up for *that* long when I was doing something useful thesis-wise in the middle of the night. It's definitely my most productive time of day.

Thanks Bilbo, been on course today and got nothing done yet, but had my tea, got a nice cuppa and going to get stuck in for couple of hours! Well, you're doing fantastic to be keeping going, i really admire you and others on here with such problems (if you don't mind me saying?). It seems so many students who face such difficulties are so determined, makes me feel pretty pathetic sometimes :$
I think evening/night time is my most productive really, when i have whole days at it, i struggle til late afternoon and then get a kick and get going! unfortunately i'm still running between writing and lab for the next few weeks so can't get the benefit out of my late night productivity! maybe best though as i really struggle to flip my clock back once I go! :p

right, into the last section I shall delve! good luck, hope you've had a productive day!?

Thanks for the kind words Alpacalover. I had to leave one full-time PhD because of the neurological disease 13 years ago. I'm not giving up on this second chance at a part-time one :)

Haven't done anything too useful today, though for the last 45 minutes I've been working through more thesis feedbacks, adding commas (seems the main task!), deleting stray words etc. I can only work on it for so long, so will be stopping soon, but I'm making slow but steady progress.

Think I might be due a cup of tea now though. Sounds like a nice idea! Good luck with your work tonight.

Hi KT and Bilbo

Glad to hear things are going well for you both. Yes, you really are an inspiration Bilbo, keep going, you'll be done soon! Good to know I've got company, we're all at our desks drinking tea. I'll be working away all day. Sun's just coming up and it's lovely and quiet and fresh. This is my most productive time. Better crack on with it - once the morning goes, is definitely harder for me to find inspiration!(up)

A

well you seem pretty close to the finish line!? whens your submission date (or plan for..?)
I think even when it feels like nothing useful has been done its still progress! i felt useless friday and sat just skimming papers and feeling stupid, but sunday sat down and managed to finish a big section which wouldnt have come together so well if not for 2 days of rubbish.. (I think!)

go get your cup of tea, mine is aaaaaahhhhhhhh awesome!!! still not managed to start any work yet though....! :-s

Hope you have a highly productive and successful morning in the aussie sunshine!

That's not procrastinating, that's looking after your mental health! Good for you going away for a week-end!

End of March next year, but since I only have about 5 good hours a week the terror hit me like a ten-ton truck a month or two ago! But feeling more positive about finishing on time now and expect to manage it. That's my uni deadline - 6 years allowed for part-timers. My funding council would allow another year if I need it, but I want to finish ASAP.

Good luck to you and Sue2604, and anyone else plugging away now.

Oh and my cup of tea was lovely thanks :)

A

Thanks, just need to work hard this week so i deserve it....! :)

I'm sure you'll be fine for march Bilbo, determination and a little bit every day/week/whenever you can, and just keep thinking positive! You'll be coool!8-)

R

Hi KT, Bilbo and Sue,

May I join you for the next few hours? Not normally one for a night shift, but have my corrections deadline tomorrow so am getting a bit desperate. :$:$ how did it get so close....? :$ ... aah well, it's not too late til the deadline has gone.

I've just made a cup of tea too and must get my conclusion rewritten and get my figures typos cleaned up by midnight or I won't sleep.
Good luck to everyone still working! (up)

Hi Ruby, welcome aboard! Sounds like you're busy too. Yes, time just creeps up on us - now only 6 months away from March, when Bilbo, Alpacalover and I are all intending to submit - yikes!! Study hard then have a good sleep. Me, I think I need to go and refuel and say hello to my sweet dog.
