The One Goal Thread

S

Sounds like you had a positive day yesterday Batfink.

Curisel- I know that I need to get back into the habit of getting up early again. It stops me getting to sleep at night if I lie in (so trying to get to sleep early to fix it won't work for me) so I have to fix these bad habits by making myself get up, which is easier said than done!

Anyways, I now getting into the swing of things with my chapter. I'm supposed to email it to my supervisor 4 weeks today. So I am aiming for 1000 words a day then a couple of weeks to tidy up. We'll see... I'm now at 300 words, so my goal is to get another 700 written today.

S

I got up to 1300 words. :-) I'm not going to kid myself, I did copy and paste some of them because I did some analysis a few months ago, but I am quite pleased to have made a good start.

I haven't read anything for a couple of months so my next goal is to read a relevant paper which I have found.

A

Cut 'n pasted or not Star-Shaped, 1300 words is great (up)

I have been finding the going really tough these last few days, sitting at the desk but not achieving anything. Just collected 80, yes 80 scripts from my supv to correct by early Feb :-(. I will have to be disciplined and only do a few a day.

PhD life not good at the moment (sprout) I don't really know what the sprout is supposed to signify but that's pretty much how I feel at the moment :-( *100

D

Well done Star-shaped, excellent working today (up)

Ady - (sprout) usually correspond to lots of hot air!!!! Sorry to hear things are not going well and that itself deflates motivation. Good idea to do a few scripts each day so that time is left for you to focus on your work in small easily acheivable goals. I think motivation is a rollercoaster in the PhD world, fab one day and flagging the next.

I hope to get the graphs annotated this evening. If I get any inserted into the thesis will be a bonus!

Hi all!
As i promised i'm back ...
exp 1 DONE (up)
ep2 PARTIALLY :$ DONE (up)
quite a productive day :-)
keep up the good work and enjoy ur weekend!!!

oh dear, I haven't been on recently. I've had loads of non-PhD work to wade through and feel like finishing even one chapter is a distant dream :-(

I'm trying today to get back in the swing of things and write one section, but its proving very difficult :-(

J

ok goal for today to finish this one exp i left in the middle...a lot of stress as i need results for 2mor!:p

Feeling a little more fired up than I have done recently - a big relief, been in a bit of a slump, but a seminar I went to on Thursday reignited my enthusiasm for my subject. So I'm actually planning to get lots done today, instead of just dragging out a little work to make myself feel less guilty!

Goals for today (similar to Friday, but I didn't quite finish on Friday):
Goal 1 - finish writing up notes from Thursday's seminar
Goal 2 - read paper about major issue raised on Thursday that I need to understand
Goal 3 - think about implications for design of my own study

J

ok this is a bit funny (or better say tragic???) i dont know if i achieved my goal today. thing is i did my exp as planned but my results arent easily interpreted and i need the interpretation for my exp 2morrow which unfortunately cannot be rescheduled :p id i dont do it 2mor i will have to redo all the preparation.

Back at it already today. Need to get my head around a new theoretical approach presented at a seminar I went to on Thursday. I've read most of the paper that discusses it, slowly so I can properly understand it. But I have other work to get on with too - yikes, why can't there be more days in the week?!

Goals for today
1.) Finish reading paper explaining new approach
2.) Think about implications for my own work
3.) Go back to questionnaire and continue revision work

S

This week I am aiming to up the word count of my chapter by 1000 words a day. My first goal is to write 400 words by lunch time.

S

I have written 700 words. (up) It is very, very rough however. After lunch I am going to write another 300 and then decide whether to carry on banging stuff out, or to tidy up what I have written so far.

A

Star-shaped, whatever your magic writing formula is please bottle it, patent it and sell it here through the forum. I will put in an advance order.

You're so productive (up)

Yikes, I agree, that's very productive working!

I've done goals 1 and 2. Just tracking down a few new journal articles that I heard about and then I'm onto goal 3 - yet more work on my questionnaire. I do seem to spend a lot of time on this bloomin' thing!

S

Well at the moment I have just started writing a chapter and because I've started the writing from scratch its easy to get a lot out. I also have just 4 weeks to draft out the chapter to send to my supervisor, coupled with a sense of competition (a relative of mine is also doing a PhD and started over a year before me but has spent ages faffing around and avoiding PhD work and still has a long way to go. She now has a lecturing job and was being a bit of an arse recently about how much more advanced and mature she is than me. So I have been thinking about how great it would be if I managed to submit before she does. Hey whatever works...).

I have now started to slump a bit. I am 150 words away from my target and feel like I have hit a brick wall with the analysis. My next goal is to plan out the introduction section for the chapter and to get at least 200 words of that written.
