Morning anybody who is around
My one goal for today is to sort out a small sub-section that gave me a lot of trouble on Thursday, so much so that I totally rebelled yesterday and did very little, apart from numerous games of bubble shooter! Actually I did also create two maps; it's that they were nothing whatsoever to do with my PhD. I also re-jigged my CV. Maybe not time completely wasted as when I look at this section today I think I know where the problem is.
Today's goal: reorganise that problematic sub-section before lunchtime
Btw: do people spend time giving their chapters and sub headings within, interesting titles? For example, at the moment my Chapter Three is titled 'Research methodology' - not exactly the most exciting title in the world!! Does it make a difference?
Hey Ady, I'm around today too :)
I think everyone is entitled to have a non-productive day! I only fixed a few things in the morning, then went out for the afternoon :) I'm finding my own writing rhythm now, and I find doing two days on, then one day off (or at least half a day off) works well for me. I know this isn't for everyone, but there's nothing wrong in rebelling from your writing!
Today I am going to analyse and write up study 1 (I've been working on this chapter backwards, so done three and two already this week).
Not work related, but I also have to choose our bedroom paint colour today so OH can get on with painting it.... considerably more fun.
Morning Ady, my chapters and subsections have relatively boring titles too, probably due to it being scienced based! i.e. Effects of chocolate consumption on moral. Implications of chocolate consumption on moral etc. All very dull to be honest but I imagine this is what is expected of this type of thesis. My quandry is whether to number the sub-sub headings eg
Chapter 4 methodology
4.1 Effects of Chocolate Consumption on Moral
Chocolate Preparation
So I currently have 'chocolate preparation' in italics as a sub-sub heading but should I number them 4.1.1 instead? Am mulling over these little things while awaiting sups final comments.
Great to know others working on Saturday morning as well :-)
Dunni, thought you were taking the weekend off?!?!? In my area (human, social sciences) it is normal practice to number sub-headings and sub sub headings.
2.1 Introduction (Bold)
2.2 Ethical considerations of this study (Bold)
2.2.1 Access (italics, non-bold)
2.2.2 Informed consent (italics, non-bold)
Enjoy the painting Pink, or are you just supervising??
I am just supervising, as paint give me bad headaches :(
When the painting and building furniture starts, I am going to decamp to the living room for couple of weeks. I really hope no one wants to come and visit us in that time, the house is going to be a bomb site.
the headings in my thesis are all numbered. Dunni, do you have access to your supervisor (if they got their phd in the same uni & field as you) or a thesis recently written in your department? I am following my supervisor's (who did their phd at the same uni, several years back). My numbering is the same as ady's.
Hi everybody,
I'm here today too to spend some time working on my bloody paper, which still needs some work to meet the requirements of the referee. Struggling with motivation as usual but I guess it's better a late start and few hours of work than nothing.
Have a productive Saturday
;-)
I'm here today too! After a long time struggling and getting nowhere I'm slowly trying to get back into some productive work. I've just found out that transfer is coming in a matter of months so I really need to get moving with things. Today I'm going to focus on the aspect of my project that I feel really out of my depth in so I'm expecting it to be a tough day!
Goal 1: figure out the inputs required for model
Happy working this afternoon everybody (up)
I've written 2000 ish words, and going to stop, because I don't want to push myself *too* hard at this stage and burn out.
I'm now going to THINK about doing some sewing. However, the cat has decided I am a very good cushion, so it may be a while before I get to do any.
Well I'm glad that you at least had a productive day Pink numbers!! I unfortunately got very little done - I really thought that I was feeling a little better so I'd be able to concentrate but maybe I'm not there yet. Time is ticking away though so I'm going to have to try again today regardless. I think I'll try get 4 tomatoes done -sounds pathetic but it would be WAY more than I've done for months now. So
Goal 1 - 1 tomato reading thesis
Take it slow Ev, don't rush yourself - the very fact that you're back onboard, doing something, even if only a little bit is positive. We can all be very hard on ourselves.
I confess to being lost - Tomatoes????????? I've seen this mentioned a few times but have no idea what it is :-( 4 tomatoes sounds a lot, of whatever tomatoes means in the context of studying, reading or whatever. Now I'm totally confused!!
Goal 1 - DONE eventually
Goal 2 - another tomato of thesis reading
Thanks for the encouragement Ady! The tomato refers to the pomodoro method - work solidly for 25 minutes then take a five minute break. 25mins = 1 tomato! There's an online timer if you're interested - http://mytomatoes.com/
ohhh I used to love using tomatoes :) It's a really good tool to get you back into the swing of working.
I had a terrible evening & night last night, I must've eaten something dodgy. I was sick all night :( Still don't feel 100%.
So I had a slow day of 1000 words. Better than nothing I guess. I've also decamped to the living room for the next 10 days or so, while OH redoes the bedroom and the furniture arrives :)
Morning all!
I had an awful end to the week last week getting no work done due to family and non PhD commitments at uni. So I am determined to get back into it this week! I love tomatoes but do find it makes me realize how unproductive i have been sometimes! My goals today are...
- Code 4 short reports in Nvivo
- Catch up on emails
- make corrections to abstract and send
- Read 2 methodology articles and make notes for methodology
Hope you all have a good day!
