The One Goal Thread

L

Morning all,

Hope you are all well, hope you're feeling better Natassia! I hate being sick above pretty much everything else (even the dreaded cold or migraine) so I sympathise!

Today I am going to do some more work on my third chapter, I think it needs a re-structure to be honest which I've been putting off as thinking about it makes my brain hurt! But I think today will be the day! Wish me luck and have a good day whatever you're all doing (up)

Morning Linda and Natassia! Hope you're both fighting fit and get lots done today.

I'm continuing with my analysis chapter, I really need to make some significant progress on it today. I also have a job interview to prepare for (yay!) - it's not til 7 Nov but they want me to read up on a particular theory and think about 2 questions before the interview so I need to spend some time on it. So I'm going to spend most of the day on the chapter, and finish up with some basic reading for the interview.

Hope you all have a good day!

Hello!

I am a newbie to this forum and coming across this thread has given me a slight boost in motivation. After feeling very disheartened after my 9 month assessment combined with supervisory and practical issues within my PhD, I have started my 2nd year on somewhat of a downer and have been looking for a way to snap out of it! I am hoping if I start using this one goal at a time idea it could be the way forward. Fingers crossed!

Good luck Batfink, it's nice to have a bit of time to prepare for a job interview so that sounds good!

And welcome to the thread Xtiny, newcomers are always welcome! Hope you find the one goal thread as useful as we all do!

I've managed to make a bit of progress this morning I think, which is good! At the moment my thesis doesn't really knit together as well as it should do so I'm concentrating on creating a tangible thread through it but I think I might have had a breakthrough this morning so fingers crossed it'll go down well with the team!

Hope you're all having a good day!

Ooh, that sounds like very positive progress, Linda!

And welcome to the thread, xtiny, hope you find it useful. I definitely find having an external place where I account for my time is helpful for keeping me motivated, so hope it works for you too.

I've been reading journal articles this morning to help write a description of the methodological/theoretical aspects of the method I'm using in my analysis chapter. But I think I may be using this as an excuse not to do the actual writing, so now I'm going to make myself write the next few paragraphs in the chapter - even if they're rubbish, at least I'll have something to work with.

Morning all,

Hope you are all well this morning!

I've just got the same goal this morning as I've had over the past couple of days -just getting on with Chapter 3, I ended up working on Chapter 2 yesterday as it's an "easier" job but I really must crack on with Chapter 3 today!

Hope you all have a good day, wherever you are :-)

Morning Linda!

I'm the same as you - keeping working on yesterday's target of just getting on with my chapter. I've come onto campus in the hopes that a change of location will make me achieve more. Fingers crossed for both of us!

Good evening-it's night time here and my goal is for the long weekend-next Friday week. Ethics application has come back the second time and has been approved so I can start collecting data. So I need to quickly revise my survey and get it ready to send out Mid November-that should only take a morning of pfaffing about, as most of it is done.

But I need to complete at least a further 3000 words of my hurdle task-draft lit review before I leave it until my Christmas break. So the first Friday evening, Sat, Sun and Monday of November, I need to achieve these two goals.

Can't do much inbetween because work is pretty full on. But its okay still, even though I'm working in blocks, am still on track...good luck to all other one goal posters...

Good luck with the work, Pjlu, hope you manage to get it done.

Today I'm going to press on with the final bit of data analysis - I've been putting it off because I don't really know what I'm doing, but I can't put it off any longer! I have three (or possibly four) models to test - if I can get one done today I'll be delighted.

Good morning!

Good luck with the data analysis! I am currently in the same situation, been putting it off for ages as I know it is going to be such a big task. I am taking 2 weeks off after today for birthday celebrations and for a conference we have been planning so there won't be much rest!

However, I am determined to gather together some basic summary data of my data set and make a plan for when I am back from holidays. Meeting with supervisor this afternoon so lots to do before then.

Hope everyone manages to achieve their goal today! It is Friday after all.

Enjoy your birthday (and conference) time off!

I've just realised that there's a deadline coming up in a couple of days for me to submit a written version of a conference paper that I gave last month for publication in the conference outcomes. I completely for4got about it - oops. So my first job today is to decide whether I have time to sort something out by the deadline. If so, I'll do that. If not, it's back to the data analysis.

Hope everyone has a good day!

Hello everyone. Took me a while to find this thread this morning, and no wonder, nobody's been on it for a week! Hope you're all having success at whatever you're doing, anyway!

I've got a job interview on Wednesday, and know that I need to answer some methodological issues in my thesis that are likely to be asked about in the interview, so today I'm going to sort out the arguments in my methodology chapter, and that will also double as preparation for the interview. There's also another job application I need to fill out, as a break from the methodology. So, that's most of my day accounted for I should think.

Hi everyone! I haven't been around for what seems like ages! I've been poorly, but feel fine now and so I've been working on editing my thesis. Since I last posted I've also been offered 3 part-time jobs, 2 of which are teaching. This now means that i have 4 very part-time jobs but the initial interview stages and induction etc have eaten up my time!

Anyway, that's all sorted now, time to get on with my thesis. Sup was happy with my first full draft which is great. At the moment I'm going through the whole thesis and making the minor changes required; chapters 1-5 are edited, which leaves chapters 6-8 and my conclusion. I then need to make a couple of major-ish changes, but they shouldn't take too long.

Hope you are all getting on okay!

Hello everyone!

Back from holidays today and it has basically taken until now to sort and reply to emails and get my head back into where I was at before holidays! The conference was a great success, so glad I decided to help organise it even though it was a lot of extra stress.

I hope you are feeling better Button, which I presume you are if you are managing 4 part time jobs! I am very impressed with your ability to take on such a workload! Batfink, how did the job interview go on Wednesday?

Today I want to create a mammoth "To do list" and reconsider how to tackle updating my literature review. I realise I need to keep thinking about why I am actually doing my study and ensure that I know the important studies in my field. So lots of organising and sorting to do today.

Hope everyone is well and has a good day.

Hello Xtiny, welcome back and hope you get lots of your organising done today!

The job interview on Wednesday went pretty well, but I didn't get the job. Not at all surprised - they take a qualitative approach to the subject area while most of my experience is in quantitative, so it was always going to be a stretch. The job went to someone who already had their PhD and experience of the methods they're using, which is fair enough. I'm applying for other jobs anyway now.

Today, I have three goals - commenting on a funding proposal sent to me by an academic in my department, finishing off (or nearly finishing) writing up a conference paper for a book of conference proceedings, and getting my head back into my last bit of data analysis to be ready to blitz it tomorrow. I've done the funding proposal comments and am a good way into the conference paper, so it's looking good for achieving the goals today. Relief! I feel like I've achieved nothing for ages.
