The One Goal Thread

Well Sup emailed back and said my results were "very well done" and then BUT.. blah blah blah. :-) always the way. She then said that she is available to talk later today which probably means I should phone, but I'd rather get on with the intro for this paper. hmmm. will see about it later.

I've also got some work to do for a student, who rather than send me a 'brief overview' of what he's doing, decided to send me his entire dissertation, which I now have to wade through in order to understand what he wants help with hmph!

Had a supervision meeting yesterday, at which I raised that I thought I hadn't yet focused enough on the theoretical perspective behind my choice of Methodology. So now I have to write two pieces to hand in in a fortnight instead of the one we'd previously agreed on. Gah! That didn't quite go according to plan!

Today's goals:

1.) To outline what needs to be done for both pieces of writing
2.) To sort out the notes I already have on each
3.) To come up with a realistic reading list / plan of action for each

I have finished the first part of this section and instead of cutting words out (which I need to do) I have been adding words. More than 1000. Oh dear. Next goal: second part of this section. (without adding too many words!!!)

I've just got an email suggesting that I really have to talk to sup haha! I knew it so now half a day of stressing before making the phone call!

ok sup call done (up) I think I'm beginning to realise that I'm not as thick as I thought I was (in PhD stuff anyway) - i've realised that my confused conversations with sup is because she doesn't move on from topics as quickly as me, so I talk about A and then talk about B and she's answering my B question with stuff relating to A. In the past I just thought I was a moron - now I understand what's going on!

Going to have lunch and get back to writing!

argh I can't concentrate on work! - I've now realised I have to go to uni tomorrow, and when I don't have a huge stretch of time e.g. 3-4 days to do writing, I just end up not being able to do it.

I'm struggling to concentrate today as well. Gah. Sometimes I just can't motivate myself at all! I have a huge book to read that I just realised is due back to the library tomorrow, and I'm messing around on Facebook playing stupid games instead of focusing :$

well no extractions today, realised i had to do more work for a talk next week so I spent all day doing stats, which came out actually better than I thought! PCA's on the brain now! I'm backing up all my work too...that means I've got all my PhD work on 2 memory sticks, my work computer, my laptop, my external hard drive and this weekend I'll update the folder on the computer at home! Slight overkill I know but at this stage, if it was all to disappear, I'd just leave! :-)

Off to the gym for some stress busting, see you all tomorrow!

Dear Sneaks, did your new version work where you have given yourself one goal at a time? I have written a mere 5,000 words for my PhD and am finding it really difficult to motivate myself. I am not living near my university and am working full-time so find it hard to start work on PhD after work. Should stop moaning and get on with it I suppose!

Morning all.

An early start for me because I want to spend as much of the afternoon as I can in the garden on a sun lounger! A good incentive to work hard today (up)

The goal for the day is again to write, write and do more writing. Over the next 2 hours my goal is to finish up the rough draft of the final section I'm working on.

S

Goal 1 done. I now have a very rough analysis section of my first chapter. It feels good- even though it is very, very rough!

The next goal is to spend between now and 10am beginning to rewrite bits and tidy up.

S

Morning all!

Like you Star-Shaped, my task today is to write....less than a week til my deadline now and I think I'm only half way through.

Goal for today then: Try to finish the section I am writing about and write a plan for the next section.

:-)

S

Good luck Sarah!

I am starting to lose my concentration a bit now. Next goal is to keep redrafting until 12, when I'll stop for lunch.

Had an amazing day off yesterday, spent the day in the lake district (thankfully, it's quite close to us) and then learning to make fresh gluten free pasta in the evening :D It was so good to give my brain a break for a day.

So back to work, still working on THAT chapter of my thesis that I know nothing about. However, have thought of a new angle on the whole chapter, that will allow me to talk more about the stuff I do know, and less about the stuff I don't. So task for this morning is to restructure the chapter.

Then it will be nice lunch with friends with salad from my garden :D

M

I just got into the office (bit of a late start today :$) and I'm hoping for a productive day!

First goal: have a look at first section of this chapter and do any revisions necessary. I'm hoping to email it to my supervisors later today, ideally with an outline for the rest of the chapter.
