Yes, unfortunately, far too common amongst us over-anxious academic types!

Writing Up and Depressed

Kronkodile is so right, everyone feels like that at this stage (and TBH, I'd be worried if they didn't!!). Every student I've known (myself included) has been convinced that their thesis is the biggest pile of pants ever written. It's completely normal to feel that you could do a much better job if you could only start again but that's what Postdoc-ing is for! The PhD is a period of research training and, despite the marathon efforts we have to go through to produce it, the thesis is not our magnum opus, nor does it need to be. The key thing is to recognise it's flaws and be prepared to justify them, whilst acknowledging that there might be better ways to approach the same problem in future. Believe me, it's when you think your thesis is flawless that you have a big problem!!! Best of luck

It's brilliant, isn't it?!

Internal Examiner at Viva - what do they do exactly?
A

In short, they do both the things you mentioned i.e. are meant to ensure fair play and usually will sign off revisions BUT can also be the worst (harshest) examiner of them all! I know 2 people who would most likely have passed first time (that is, without major revision for both and a 2nd viva for one) had it not been for a very difficult internal. My advice? Choose your internal examiner with as much care as the external! Good luck!!

Where to put publication(s) on CV
A

You might want to split skills into research skills (where you can list anything relevant to the project you are applying for, lab techniques, stats etc) and general stuff...just an idea. Good luck with your application. BTW, I agree with the others, separate section for publications (usually towards the end) and I'd put qualifications before employment too.

Journal submission - how should I go about this?
A

Don't worry about contacting journal editors with queries about potential manuscripts, that's what they are for! Far better to contact an editor if in doubt, than to waste time (yours and theirs) by sending your paper in the wrong format etc. Editors are usually very helpful (well, all the ones I've ever contacted have been). Good luck with your paper submission.

Phd by publication.

I agree with Otto, Kronkodile et al, PhD by publication is not a feasible route for most people. Search the forum archives for further info, this question appears quite regularly.

PhD Interview - what do I wear???
A

Search the forum archives for lots of opinions, this question comes up a lot! Good luck with the interview

What do PhD students wear?

I did my PhD in a hospital department and there was a no jeans policy (cos of patient contact etc).

My supervisor is busy
A

The University has a duty to ensure you get adequate supervision. I suggest you:

1) contact your supervisor (ideally on the telephone, harder to ignore a call than an e-mail) and explain that you really need his/her help and feedback and ask to arrange a meeting. Be firm but polite!

2) If you still don't get a satisfactory response then contact someone from your graduate school/research degrees office and explain that you do not feel you are getting adequate supervision and ask them to find you additional support ASAP (or to apply pressure to your supervisor so that he/she supports you!).

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Home sweet home!!!

Great to have you back!
